I love how this is really the growth of learning an instrument. When we start we mostly all want to shred 🙃 then after a while that feel and having conversation with the music around you seems to becomes THE thing

I was lucky being born in an age where I had to comp as long as I wanted to solo. 12 choruses? Meant 12 choruses of comping. I also had a keyboard that could handle the drums and bass. But I had to play the walking bass for just as many choruses. You really learn a lot when you have to repeat the progressions that long, and on different instruments

Do you think you could do a full breakdown of how to learn and practice a song? (assuming you haven't already) Like if a beginner wanted to start by learning "So What?" what should they start with, how should they learn the song, etc. Just an overview showing the steps to learning a full song as a guideline for people to follow?

your comping course is excellent. everyone who's digging this video should really consider buying that course. I had to take a month or so long break from playing guitar after my left hand decided it learned too much. lol.

I think that tip about repeating til boredom comes from Monk! Good video.

I've been paying more attention to comping watching guitar duos lately. For most guitar players that is our first experience with jamming and holding it down for a solo.

Hey jens,,, I really liked this video. It's simplicity in breaking things down into "digestible " parts, measure to measure, is super helpful for comping but it also gave me some cool ideas in regards to chord melodies. Thx again!!

This was really helpful, thank you. I sort of came up playing nothing but Freddie Green quarters but that was the job with the band I was with. Then I heard Eddie Bickert and Jim Hall play this kind of comping behind Paul Desmond and I wondered, how did they do that? Then I heard Joe Pass behind Stephan Grappeli. Wow. So this is a big help in that direction.

Hey jens, I’m playing. These examples on a semi hollow and I was wondering string gauge truly matters when it comes to jazz? Are roundwounds bad for this?
@JensLarsen11 күн бұрын
Hi Glenn, I don't think it matters that much. I am using roundwounds

Hi Jens - The pianist on the Sonny Stitt album you show (Sonny Side Up) is not Oscar Peterson, it’s Ray Bryant. Were you thinking of a different Sonny Stitt album?

No, I was thinking of a different Dizzy album 🙂

Very good and helpful advice, however if there's a keyboard player in the band most of them get annoyed with the guitarist comping in this manner. When I play a jam with a keyboard I turn my volume off just so I can get the practice comping without annoying the keyboard player.
@JensLarsen12 күн бұрын
Well, if there are more people comping you should take turns, it is not so that keyboard players have more right to comp. I have a video discussing this with Aimee Nolte if you are curious about how we see it

@@JensLarsenGreat video! I’m a piano player and try to make enough space when comping with guitarists. If they’re using close voicings I’ll go more quartal. It’s all about listening and being sensitive to what everyone else is doing. Gilad Hekselman gave us some great advice on this when I was studying for my Jazz MA. Wynton Kelly is my favourite comper of all time. His work with Wes! ☺️
