I made a 16x16 sized block and a 5x5 sized house and I had no world edit but I used quartz so yeah but I did make a bed a crafting table furnace a pumpkin a cake a chest a pig and a iron door with lever and it was all hollow so I connected it all through all the hollow walls but I did used quartz.

I think there is a mod named Cubic Chunk (or something like that) that change the sky and ground limit to whatever you want, it can be as much as you like. So I think you should try it out and build a big, BIG house ^^

Actually... the sky is blocks as well. Whenever there's a vacancy in a potential block location, Minecraft automatically fills it with an air block. This includes all the area between the ground and the sky limit. Pass the sky limit is truly only a sky box, which can still be broken into two dimensional blocks (squares I suppose). Minecraft really is ALL blocks!

Also for future reference, if you play with NEI, you can press f9 to show a grid layout of the chunk boundaries. If you built each super block to take up a 16x16x16 space, then you can build it using the the grid for reference so you know where each super block begins and ends
