There are contradictions in Beńthams theory on utilitarianism in so much as he proposes that the individual is as important as the masses. so far as utilitarianism in effect in Mayan times would through their belief system that sacrifice of individuals meant the greater masses would prosper. There is a moral argument therefore against utilitarianism would you not think?
@CriminologyWeb4 жыл бұрын
Well, that depends on the definition of the moral in argument. In utilitarianism, morality is defined by the overall result of an action. So if an action results in more good than bad, utilitarianism considers it good.
@peterwalsh63054 жыл бұрын
@@CriminologyWeb thanks for the reply CW but ethically or morally I personally would rather take my chances against the will of the Gods rather than violently, or otherwise take the life of a human being no matter how strong the argument is! 🤔🙄😖

The "criticism" presented against Utilitarianism in this video is logically flawed for it didn't really explain the problem with Utilitarianism. What was presented was a case of ad hominem. It is likely that Utilitarianism has a flaw, but the point raised in this video was talking more about the presenter of the proposition (Jeremy Bentham), rather than the proposition itself (Utilitarianism).
@Pugetwitch2 жыл бұрын
As somebody with Asperger's I can assure you we most certainly do not suffer. If anything, we thrive. We tend to over excel. It's definitely not a "suffering" - in fact, I dare say the only suffering we do is suffering the NT fools who surround us! 🤣🤣🤣

Big flaw in this philosophy is happiness could be subjective. If a society claims that slaughtering 6 million jews makes them feel happier, who's to say that society is wrong then?

A fairly good video until the totally ignorant statement; 'Bentham was essentially an armchair philosopher' With great respect you need to read up on Bentham, his interests were entirely practical. He was responsible for a huge amount of social reform, was the moving force behind much legal reform, helped set up the UK's first police force, was one of founders of University College London, an antislavery campaigner etc, etc. He was not really a philosopher at all; he was only interested in practical results, this is absolutely clear in both his life and and writings. Why did you spoil an otherwise good video with such uninformed stupidity.
