Rik Mayall is a comedy genius in my eyes. I met him when he was touring The New Statesman. He walked the streets of Nottingham as his character Alan B'Stard MP, abusing people for being northern. He was hilarious. When he was Rik for the interview he was a lovely bloke. He went off and changed and came back as Alan and was a right B'Stard. He stayed completely in character for the shoot. Sadly when I saw The New Statesman later on the tour in Richmond, he was ill. The understudy was good, but he wasn't Rik.
The day filming in Nottingham was a great experience though. Watch for the moment when he takes the mick out of a hapless young man.
When I was editing the feature, I had to run five contentious points past the producer of the programme. Two of them were OK, the other three had to be edited out for reasons of taste, decency and in one case blasphemy.
Top bloke though.
