+ThGameSystem10 It's not Star Trek. JJ wanted to make a Star Wars movie so bad that he tried to do that with this. Star Trek isn't and have never been all about action but the story and exploration. It's not a bad movie but doesn't feel like Star Trek. I like the movie and I like JJ. So glad he finally gets to make the Star Wars movie he's always wanted and the one we deserve.

I love both the 2009 reboot and this one and while Into Darkness had a few more noticeable weaknesses, I think I liked this one a bit more. Everything had a lot more depth and the stakes were much higher. It did feel like a natural progression from the reboot. Also, in this film, the new actors (particularly Chris Pine and Karl Urban as Kirk and McCoy) really reminded me of the original actors' portrayals of their respective characters. The only convenience that I didn't like in the film was Spock talking to Spock Prime. That just felt like cheating.

I understand why the old Trekkies don't like these new movies, but come on people, it's an alternate Star Trek universe, almost like their timeline was reset. We can have some new mixed in with the old. I've seen both new and old Trek movies, and both the new ones feel like updated and modern versions of the old ones. There's still something there that is quintessentially, well, Trek. And I absolutely love Star Wars, I was a hardline Wars fan before these new movies came out and then I started to really like both, whereas before I found the old Trek movies entertaining but not as engaging. And honestly, I liked Cumberbatch's Khan better than Ricardo Montalban's *FLAME SHIELD ON*
@philipworks16698 жыл бұрын

The timeline reset from the moment of Kirk's birth. Khan's life and his race were decided 200 years earlier. Despite Bones saying, "he's 300 years old" This is all in video and completely researchable, and basic math. So yeah, that's why we are pissed. Compare Ricardo Montalbán and Cumberbitch. Not even close.

In the previous movie, Ohura ordered 3 drinks at the bar where she met Kirk, one of them was a Kardassian drink. Which is a race that was in TNG. Since no one has gone on a 5 year mission, would they have met them yet? When Kirk and Spock fought in Amok Time, the air on Vulcan was too hot and thin for Kirk. In the first Star Trek, Kirk and Sulu fought on a Romulan drill many miles above the surface of Vulcan with no helmets on. JJ just has no grasp of basic physics. JJ did great getting an awesome new cast. Chris Pine is easily better than Shatner, he out "Kirked" the original. Shatner will always be the original but Pine IS the Kirk I have read in the novels and comics.

Consequences in the Star Trek Universe that came out of this movie: 1. Spaceships are now useless because we can use a bullshit personal teleporter device to instantly get to anywhere in the galaxy. 2. Nobody can ever die because we have that bullshit serum made from Kahns blood that will magically do things like bring people back to life after they have died of severe radiation poisoning. As a Star Trek fan (TNG specifically) i was a little disappointed with the first movie because Abrams was taking the franchise away from scifi and moving it more into Fantasy (which makes sense because Abrams is mainly a Star Wars fan) but it was still a good and entertaining movie that had great character development and interplay among the different characters, without too much illogical bullshit (other than that stupid Red Matter). This movie, however, went full fantasy. Magical portable transporters that could beam a person many hundreds of light years away, even though in the 24th century (the reboot movies take place in the 23rd century) the maximum range of a Starfleet transporter was 40,000KM. A special "subspace" transporter was invented later in the 24th century, but even that only had a range of a few light years, nowhere near the range that would be needed to transport from Earth to Qo'nos. So apparently, nobody in the Star Trek Universe will ever need a ship again because no matter where in the galaxy (or, at least, the Alpha quadrant) you want to go, you can now just instantly transport there. Star Trek movies can no longer have any tension, due to protagonists being in physical danger, because if they die we can just give them that Khan's blood serum and bring them back to life. I am very happy that Abrams has moved on to Star Wars, I think he will be much more at home in a Universe where things don't have to make sense.

I really liked it until they went WAY WAY WAY overboard with the EXACT rehashing of the ending of Wrath of Khan. Fan service is great! And similarities and parallels in this universe are fine. But that just went way overboard. I almost feel like the director was going "Fine. You want fan service. Have some!" and shoveled that down our throats. I dunno. It just really ticked me off. The rest of the movie was really good! I had minor gripes here and there but they really were minor, no big deal things. But that scene was just too much and it completely killed the immersion for me because immediately I'm back in the 80's seeing a totally different scene which reminds me that I'm watching a movie. And that defeats the purpose of making a movie/tv show/etc. Anyway, that was my only gripe. Cumberbatch did a great job, though he had really big shoes to fill! And overall, 2009 was my favorite of these 2 movies. Also, something I think you didn't really hit on in your review of the 2009 movie review is how perfectly some of the casting was in this movie when matching them up to the old actors who played them so long ago. Especially the casting for Kirk! But I think all of the casting choices were just incredible. And the kid who played Kirk, filling Shatner's shoes... wow! I've never seen someone emulate him so well without overacting and exaggerating. Excellent job, in my opinion! =)
@derekbates431611 жыл бұрын
I can't agree with you, I just can't. While it may seem like a rehash, it had more emotion, especially when Jim said "I'm scared, Spock"; how could you not feel the impact of such hero admitting to how fragile he is in such a moment? Plus, Kirk dying to save the Enterprise is pure Kirk; it is what he would do if he isn't able to get to the bridge and the ship's core NEEDS to be restarted.
@thedon70827 жыл бұрын

well you must also ask how much he was changed by meeting kirk. In the original series they have been friends for years so he may have been as is in this au before he met Kirk. and with Kirk being different as well as other events like the loss of so many ships and personal as well as an entire planet at the destruction of Vulcan (his homeworld) it is understandable that Spock would not be the same one as in the Original series.

Kahn still exists in the alternate universe, though, even before Into Darkness. It would have been idiotic on the filmmakers' part not to include him in at least one of the films and I LOVED Cumberbatch as Kahn. In fact, and I'm saying this as a loyal Star Trek fan, I sort of prefer this Kahn to the original (which I still love). This Kahn was just a lot more sympathetic and I really understood where he was coming from and his logic. I really hope we see more of him in future films (especially if they show the war between Starfleet and the Klingon Empire play out). He's just a wild card and I love that about the character.

I like Into Darkness more for the simple fact that there is less in it to have to excuse away. In 2009, I had to emphasize (its not about the details, its about the characters, and they're all (to steal your phrase) AWESOMETACULAR). But in Into Darkness, the entire presentation from start to finish was awesome. Any nitpicking was exactly that, nitpicking. And above all else (spoiler alert), it ends with a return to ideals, so I am truly optimistic about the future of the reboot franchise.

The battle between the Vengeance and Enterprise just kills the whole movie for me. Two federation ships shooting at each other next to the moon in close proximity to earth, yet the rest of starfleet, although they got an enormous starbase with additional ships in earth-orbit, don't recognize the fighting. On top of that, Spock is able to contact new Vulcan, which isn't even in the same solar-system, but can't/wouldn't think of contacting starfleet-hq which is just around the corner for help?

And in the next film, he can watch more of the original series and the books, to get more experience and make the next one great. I enjoyed your review, keep it up buddy. Thanks

I am a huge fan of Benedict Cumberbatch and I love Abrams' Star Trek. I was really excited when they announced that Cumberbatch was the bad guy for the movie. I haven't seen it yet and it's driving me nuts because Cumberbatch raises the bar whenever he is a part of the cast. I am really interested to see his portrayal in up coming Hobbit movies with his Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman. Their chemistry on screen is amazing.

Did we watch the same movie? Cumberbatch really was given a good deal of Trek-styled dialogue and he utilized it perfectly. The only flaw was that I did wish that he had a big ideological showdown with Spock in the middle of their big fight but still, I thought it was great.

I loved the star trek into darkness film. I saw both on the same day. 1pm watched Star trek 2009 and 4:30pm watched star trek into darkness. So I'd say I preferred into darkness

It is actually a fairly short movie (compared to many that I watch) at 2 hours 12 minutes. I think you might feel this because of the pace, because it just. keeps. going. I loved the movie however. Also, movies like Lord Of the Rings and the like are just about 3 hours.

"Are there other people in this scene? I don't know, he could be talking to the wall and I wouldn't give a shit." - totally my reaction on Benedict's scenes lol xD Maaaan you're so awesome. xD

However, I am a Classic Trek fan as well as a reboot fan and I enjoyed this movie. In fact, I would say that I loved it. Who didn't "hear about Khan??" Everyone did, whether it was during the movie or prior.

I just freaking loved this movie. Everything in there worked. And those references.. damn!

JJ Abrams setting his reboot in a parallel universe to that of the original was a genius move. Not only did he avoid angering Trekkies, gave them nerdgasms by bringing out Spock Prime in the 2009 movie, but also succeeded in paying homage to the Wrath of Khan (1982) with identical scenes in Into Darkness. ** SPOILER ALERT ** I'm so looking forward to his projects on that proposed 5 year expedition mentioned in the very end.

I'm not upset. In fact I respect the way you responded to me. I understand where you are coming from. Its not easy to write something timeless. And if you hated the first one you won't like this one. I really enjoy star trek as well. The problem is it grew stale, and they needed to draw a bigger audience or it would fail to exist. I really enjoy what they've done with the last two, its really fresh I know you covet the old movies but honestly i feel you are looking at them with nostalgia glasses
@nmcvicker0311 жыл бұрын
and this is not a remake. Its a new take. When they rebooted the timeline, these characters don't just disappear, the same people exist just in a parallel universe. This movie isn't perfect but it was entertaining, and the chemistry of the actors they've selected are great. And its fantastic to finally see star trek get a huge budget and see the enterprise and star fleet get the big budget treatment. But again i respect your opinion, just wish you'd give it a chance then form an opinion.

There are very few movies I like enough to spend $20-$30 for the dvd and I have to say that this is one of them. It was so awesome I left the theatre wanting to pay another $15 to watch it again, that happens every few years with me. This is a must see movie.

well, just because we've seen a Tribble doesn't mean we can't still have them be involved somehow. And my wish for the third movie is a more dungeon-crawling Indiana Jones like adventure, where the Enterprise crew and a Klingon crew are on a planet, or in a system, hunting some sort of ancient technology/knowledge, which could conceivably involve the Guardian of Forever, but at the end, solving the puzzle would involve cooperation, not them defeating each other. Definite Trek-like message

I enjoyed it but didn't think it was as good good as I thought, In my opinion I would buy it on blu ray, still good though, I'm interested to see what he does for STAR WARS vII

I think in the 3rd movie, I think it would be a good idea to introduce The Borg Queen. I think she should be written and portrayed as a female version of The Joker, Raoul Silva, and Hannibal Lecter rolled into one or like a Borg version of Queen Ravenna (SW&TH). With the right actress and a good script, I think they could outshine Cumberbatch's performance!

I gotta to admit I really enjoyed this movie. Everything was built up, the themes were interesting and felt like something the original series would've tackled. But then the last fifteen minutes kicked in and I'm just like "Come on you guys you were doing so well and then you had to take two steps back." However, I'm still willing to see the film again if I get the chance and I still think it's really good. I'm just gonna skip that last fifteen minutes.

But everybody looked like the originals, except Khan - who conspicuously looked very not like Khan When they originally said he'd been cast as the villain, there was speculation that he might be Captain Garth - because at least he looks like him. But he looks so not like Khan that you might as well have cast Martin Lawrence as Khan.

I always thought there should have been a scene of Khan meeting Marla McGivers on the Enterprise. In fact it would have been really cool if there'd been a scene where Marla shows Khan her art collection-have a scene exactly the same as Space Seed.

Also, the 2009 movie is really effing good as well. You can get a lot out of it by just watching it alone, but you get more out of it by watching the 2009 movie. And bonus points if you watch Wrath of Khan....a lot of parallels and references. :)

Dope movie. The twist of the khan reveal was awesome not to mention his durability to withstand the assault of Kirk on Kronos!

I really enjoyed the film, but only for the first hour and a half. I felt like they wrapped up the ending to easily and they just needed an excuse to tie up the loose ends after all the action sequences we sat through. Especially Cumberbatch's role I felt iffy about. Not in the sense that he didn't give 100% (I assure you, I too have a broner), but they didn't seem to give enough closure to his character or his purpose in the end.
