I just discovered this channel a few days ago. This video in particular hit me with an incredible wave of nostalgia. A This was the very first game I ever owned for a portable system, as I finally got a Game Boy Advance SP (the model with the frontilit screen RIP) on my ninth birthday after months of begging. I played Super Mario Advance for months and never got close to completing it - I later discovered that Super Mario Advance 2-4 were much more my speed - but it didn’t even matter. The fact that I could be so enraptured with such a simple, gimmickless platformer almost twenty years after its initial release shows how truly timeless Nintendo properties can be at their best.

Well this was the only one which really upgraded it. SMB 3 they just added new levels if you had the e-reader, and added a few extra slot machine games but that's about it really. Super Mario World is identical to the SNES version from what I can see (decided to play it and beat it recently cos I'm used to the SNES version). But SMB 2 advance? Yeah they added a ton of stuff to this, and I regard it as the best version despite screen crunch.

The graphics and sounds were so impressive to me at the time. Looking at it now though, a lot of the "additions" to the gameplay do seem pretty superficial. I like that way of framing the GBA as a weird mix of old and new. So many games were ports or sequels, maybe Golden Sun was the only unique experience I had on the system.

Found the Djinn system to be counterintuitive to make it effective (always disabling them on the map screen to enable a summon right off the bat). Hated the FFI style of “If a character is set to attack an enemy that is killed by another character with higher agility, _their turn is wasted.”_ But I still found it charming.

I have a huge amount of nostalgia for the GBA. It was the very first platform I ever bought directly on launch day, not several months later after I had saved up enough. I poured over the launch titles, thinking hard about which title I would get day 1 with it...and Mario Advance was _not_ a title I went with. I already owned Mario 2 on NES, and again on SNES via Super Mario All-Stars. Spending my limited income as a teenager on Mario 2 seemed like an utter waste. So instead, my day one GBA purchase along with the system itself was F-Zero Maximum Velocity. I loved F-Zero on SNES and felt right at home with this new one. No racing game had ever ran so smoothly and fast on a handheld. It was truly impressive stuff for the time.
