Who doesn’t love a good guitar story? It’s very easy to see how much this guitar means to him. I didn’t realize a relatively new guitar, or a guitar that isn’t from the original owner, can draw as much love as this one does for Caleb. This video just made my day.

Great guitar story, and a sweet sounding instrument. And both of you play it well, and it just sounds amazing in Caleb's hands.

For the life of me I can't wrap my head around a guitar player wearing a hole in their guitar. There are countless players who play their acoustic guitars more than the average player and they don't wear a hole in the body of their guitar. How does that happen? Conventional wisdom dictates that if you see a wear spot on your guitar you might want to make a concerted effort to avoid it getting worse. I don't know. I like my guitar hole-free. I guess different strokes.

Caleb, you’re well on your way to having a cool Willie style Trigger 2! Congrats on getting her tuned up and singing again. Who says two sound holes aren’t better than one…. lol

I love stories connected with guitars and how they become more and more important and mystical to people as they get older. I mean honestly you could get a brand new and potentially as well sounding guitar, but no way would it bring as much joy to the player and people around as something that has gone through so much, pleased that many people in the past and been there during many events of significant importance to us.

Absolutely remarkable guitar. Glad you did not repair the hole. It would have looked odd, as I have seen one where that was done. A repair like that would have impacted the sound. Great video.

I once owned two identical spec D-28s - 1971 and 1972. The '71 sounded radically different to the '72 - somehow louder and with more projection. I used this one for live. The '72 was quieter and more controlled - it recorded beautifully. Same bracing, same wood but I suspect the top on the '71 was slightly thinner. They're such beautiful guitars.

Neck resets aren't a badge of honor and isn't the result of how much the guitar is played. It's the guitar not being properly maintained. The hole in the top is a sign of how much the guitar has been played, the amount of neck resets are not. Keep that guitar properly humidified and maybe go to a lighter gauge string.

Yeah they changed the bracing of the D-28 in 1944 to a non scalloped bracing, because people were putting heavy gauges of strings on ti and it was tearing top off of them. They reintroduced the scalloped bracing in 1976 with the HD-28 brand. But if you wanted the closest pre war Martin D-28 that everybody wants, it's the HD-28 which brought back the haring bone and the fancy snowflake inlay and most important, the scalloped bracing which lets that top vibrate like a bat out of hell.

Just abject curiosity here, but with playing for over fifty years with too many other guitarists to count, I've never seen a hole worn in that spot and can't figure out how it was done. Anyone have an idea?

That occurred to me too. My guess is the player rests his pinky finger on the top on that spot while he plays with his fingers or a pick. There's no way that's from strumming.

Martin enthusiasts know exactly why the phrase “for a 70’s Martin” is said often. I will say scalloping braces does help tremendously. That guitar is cool. I’d definitely pick it up if I saw it in a shop.
