You can play just about any natural note (except for F) in the first chord, but for heaven's sake NEVER play the G because that note totally kills the color of the chord. It's really an Am11 (no G) chord. Also instead of G7sus4 I would play a pure G (not seventh or sus). For the Bm7 I would use B11. Going a little deeper one could construct the song from modal chords based on fourths. The first chord being A-E-B-(F#), the second being E-B-F# etc. Model chords with parallel shifts up (Bb) and down B. Even the F, G, A resolution could be F-C-G followed by G-D-A resolving into A-E-B

Great lesson Jeremy. This is a special song for me. It got me started listening to and loving jazz music. I was 13 years old when I first heard it. Check out the original recording on the album “Return To Forever” with Joe Farrell (sax) and Chick (Rhodes electric piano)…beautiful!

I guess I like the various different options you try. As long as any other instruments agree somewhat with what you've chosen, that's good by me.

Like the video before watching it! !🥰 I like this album. The album cover is the most consistent with the songs I have ever seen. {sometime ago} this song was on my single rotation a while ago!
