Hi, I couldn't find any other place Jerma seems active on social media to say this or where someone who is in contact with him (such as an editor) could communicate this to him. I have a hunch about what may be the reason Jerma is sick as I have had almost all of his same exact symptoms before. When I was 19 I started to feel horrible fatigue, horrible body aches, neck tightness and pain, and head pressure that caused severe headaches. It felt like my head was imploding and I also heard a strange high-pitched buzz in my right ear with every heartbeat. I was debilitated and mostly relegated to resting. I did not have diarrhea but the other symptoms I had Jerma is also currently experiencing. It took a really long time to diagnose me, and eventually I was officially diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus). The catalyst for that was that my dad's cousin was an opthamologist at the time and my dad told him what I was experiencing. My dad's cousin then suggested I have an appointment with him and get my eyes checked as you can actually see evidence of many diseases in the eye. What he saw was a bowing-out of my optic nerves, a symptom of increased cerebro spinal fluid pressure (intracranial hypertension). My dad's cousin immediately found a neurologist for me who asked me to go to the emergency room as intracranial hypertension typically is evidence of Meningitis, and prolonged pressure on the optic nerve causes blindness! I went to the ER and met with the neurologist soon after seeing my dad's cousin, and I got a spinal tap (very uncomfortable but very much needed). Normal spinal fluid has 0-5 white blood cells per whatever measurement they use, my spinal fluid test showed I had 100 white blood cells. This indicated infection, meaning Meningitis. I was admitted and put into a quarantine room. After several more tests during my stay, it was found I had no infection (yet still had the high white blood cell count). This was evidence of an autoimmune response- my own body attacking my brain and causing the buildup of excess spinal fluid. I still wasn't diagnosed properly for a while because unfortunately US doctors care little to explain the atypical and tend to follow "standard" procedure, that is to say they are not open-minded as to looking for explanations you wouldn't find in a lot of medical literature to fit patient symptoms. I went to a Rheumatologist and he told me my symptoms were due to my weight. I was devastated as this made no sense, and the doctor declined to even test me for any diseases (he unfortunately was a geezer who was about to retire). However, I had already been seeing a neurologist at UCSF medical center who was fairly young and he could not diagnose me either. I felt helpless and suffered greatly. By mere fortune, one day my mom was talking to a lady at her work about my symptoms and this lady said she had an autoimmune disease and had a great doctor. Well I ran to that doctor and she was so open and receptive and actually ordered blood tests for me and I tested positive for ANA and double-stranded DNA. If you have one of those markers, Lupus is a possible diagnosis, but having both is a complete confirmation of Lupus. Finally I was able to get treatment. That unfortunately included six months of Chemotherapy (one five hour session of IV chemo in a hospital per month). This chemo is much milder than chemo for cancer and you do not get sick from it really except that day and do not lose your hair. It does kill your immune system though and I caught a cold which sometimes turned into bronchitis almost every month I had it. This treatment was required as chemotherapy can cross the blood-brain barrier whereas other medications cannot. After that treatment my white blood cells were gone, although the intracranial hypertension has stayed (the condition of having that chronically is called Pseudotumor Cerebri). However with medication that condition is well managed and the buzzing has stopped, and my eyes are checked twice a year to make sure my optic nerves aren't bowing-out too much. With other medication my Lupus has stayed mild and in check (I'm one of the lucky ones). It has come however, with a slew of other conditions as autoimmune diseases often cause other conditions (which is also why I think you having IBD already lends itself to you getting another autoimmune disease). All this to say, I have been through the bizarre symptoms and the doctors who cannot offer or do not make the effort to offer a plausible diagnosis. It took me seeing an eye doctor to find out my diagnosis, which sounds crazy. Jerma, your symptoms ring so familiar to me that I wanted to tell you my story in order to urge you to take a closer look, and if you do and find yourself diagnosed with an autoimmune disease- a glimpse of what to expect yet knowing there is hope for a positive outcome. Also to tell you to advocate for yourself and be insistent with doctors (contrary to popular belief they do not know everything). If you are feeling headaches with head pressure you should definitely get your eyes examined to see if there is evidence of intracranial hypertension in your brain. As I said, if you have this you could end up going blind! To me, your symptoms scream of autoimmune disease. The fact you have IBD and your symptoms have gotten worse makes total sense as IBD is an autoimmune disease meaning you are predisposed to such conditions, and it's caused by an inflammatory process which would worsen your IBD symptoms (diarrhea) if you got another autoimmune disease. Another reason I think autoimmune disease is highly likely is because food poisoning can trigger autoimmune diseases, especially in those who are predisposed as you are. Autoimmune disease is often triggered by infection, especially in those predisposed to autoimmune disease (those who already have one or have a family history of them). My Lupus was triggered by a bad case of the Epstein-Barr virus, and I was predisposed as my maternal grandmother had Rheumatoid Arthritis. I really hope that what I have said speaks to you and you do get your eyes checked. If you have no evidence of pressure on your optic nerves then good, you've ruled out something horrible. But you must rule it out because again, as I said you will go blind if you have intracranial hypertension and do not address it. I hope you find answers and are able to get better and quickly. Sorry this is like a novel by the way, but I know what I suffered and hate to see people go through the same thing or something similar. Wishing you well!
