Ever...I've seen Jerry play live 4 times, from the 90s to a handful of years ago when I took my daughter to see them as her first rock show. Every bit as great and more impressive as either. We both love Jerry and Alice in Chains.

Didn’t get me wrong Layne is probably one of my favorite singers ever .. easily in my top 5 ... or even top 3 ...but everyone always praises him for his work and they never say too much about Jerry ... he’s so underrated...I’m sure Jerry Cantrell put so much of himself in every AIC song maybe more anyone else in the band and he’s tho reason they were truly an amazing band ... he pushed the art ... it’s funny that he said that about a lot of the picks he had ... he spoke about the Feel of the songs and the Feel that those bands created ... I think that’s the main reason I love AIC ... the feelings of sorrow ... loneliness.... pain ... Jerry is such a great musician 🙌🏻

@@maggiethecat1538 Bunch of hippies lol btw if you take that stuff seriously focus on the sidereal zodiac, the tropical is a waste of time. But I agree, Jerry Cantrell is an absolute legend, he did the majority of the songwriting when Layne was in the band! Not to say he wasn't an extremely talented songwriter himself, both from what Jerry has said in the past about how he would compose and write his own personal stuff and how he contributed I think most lyrics to songs on the tripod album, it's obvious that Layne was pretty talented aswell! Not just as a singer, but yeah I think both are and were pretty sensitive souls! Jerry is a Pisces Sun and Ascendant, but he's actually a Capricorn moon! As for Layne, I think he was a Leo Sun and Ascendant with a Pisces moon sign!

I knew the hipsters would be coming out of the woodwork trashing Jerry's mainstream picks on this. The reality is I think he was being honest and basically showing everyone the groundwork for what truly influenced him to be one of the greatest tone masters in the world of guitar. The funny thing is, most people don't realize how influential these albums were, nor do they realize how many albums were created with a goal to achieve the feel of these pieces of classic rock. Whether people want to recognize it or not, just Back in Black alone is the impetus for so many really great albums that came after it. Everyone of those albums are a blueprint for making something really magical- because that's what they were. Anyone that makes music for pure enjoyment and pushes to reach a level of very high craftsmanship can understand these picks, especially from somebody as successful and creative in his own rite.
@LFRALPHNSTUFF

I agree it's cool that Jerry picked what influenced him. But it's a stretch to say people don't realize how influential these albums are.
@grajmahal
@grajmahal 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know- people realize these albums were influential. But I was trying (unsuccessfully) to say that there were and are a lot of producers that really used specific aspects of what was a achieved on these albums as a benchmark for much of the work they created. A lot of the nuances, from the sounds of particular instruments, to the reverb effects used, to how it was mixed- was a blueprint for so much music. Beyond what most realize.

Yeah, totally "underrated", babe.

Dave Carsley when an artist is good they’re alway “uNdErRaTeD” it gets old, at this point you can say any artist is underrated. It’s an over used term for sure. Like one ones going around saying that jerry isn’t a great guitarist, that would be under rating him, he might not be talked about as much as some other guitarist that came before him but that doesn’t make someone under rated, underrating someone makes them underrated. Funny how that works

I LOVE this picks. Rather than do what most people on this show do which is to list down a litany of obscure artists that they might not even listen to as much, Jerry decided to pick music that speaks to him, that continues to influence and inspire his own music. Straight to the classics and there's nothing wrong with that. Nothing pretentious too.

Gawd, so much of Gen X sounds no different than the uptight and holier than thou generation that came before them with all their millennial tirades. “Kids these days...” yeah, yeah. This ad nauseam has been said throughout all of human history, but of course the older generation these days are obsessed with disparaging millennials like no generation that came before (millennials are actually getting up there though - no teenager/under 21 in the world counts as a millennial, so 10 years from now when you’re musing about the “real” and good ol’ days, make sure youse older know-it-alls start referring to the youngest and seemingly clueless and devoid of good taste generation as Generation Z... nah, that’s asking too much from y’all). Many of my favorites as well. I love that he picked Sabbath Paranoid. Because for me Tony Iommi and Jerry are both riff masters.

Finally an artist that has an all around great taste in music that I can relate to. Most artists try to come up with crap you never heard of as to be cool! Except Katy Sagal. What a blues woman!

I saw AIC open for Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer on the Clash of the Titans tour in the early 90's. Relatively unknown, they blew those other bands away. Jerry is such an incredible song writer. Their albums are all killer, no filler.

Gotta lol at those on here dissing this vid/Jerry on the basis that he's only revealed music he enjoyed/ influenced him and not chosen a selection of obscure music from the past or used the opportunity to plug lesser known current bands. Interesting vid and a big thumbs up from me to him for choosing Black Sabbath and the Beatles :)

Terrific episode! One of my 2 favorites...the other being Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner & Arlen Thompson. These are like learning the history behind musicians' inspirations & creativity - Very much appreciate when the artists are well-spoken, well rounded & know music history beyond their own particular genres - Jerry is not only phenomenal guitarist, but seems genuine & down-to-earth as well!

Met Jerry back in the 90's, one of my favorite players from that decade - this is great insight on a point I've always tried to pass on about influences in that the great players allow any good music to influence them and usually like much more music than many of the listeners
