I'm reading the book Owsley and Me about the adventures of Rhoney Gissin Stanley. She came up with the idea of letting musicians jam on Owsley's sound system when the bigger bands were out touring. Garcia assured her it would be a success because he promised to be there and play! They were actually worried nobody might show. lol They were wrong. THIS IS THE FIRST NIGHT AT THE CAROUSEL of musicians just jamming to jam. It cost $1 to get in. All because of Rhoneys's idea!

Just read a bit more....The Carousel closed about a month later because of financial problems. Bill Gramm took up the lease and turned it into the Fillmore West after that. It was a brief moment in time that this happened :)

Yeah, do you mean that, since we are in the time, and rhyme(?), a mime that is now, it helps to be reminded of a time, such as iconically, San Francisco in the late '60's, and be taken back to recall experientially what it was like when this music was in the mix of things as they were happening?

for the record......May 21, 1968 is the 142nd day of the year 1968 in the Gregorian calendar. There are 224 days remaining until the end of this year. The day of the week is Tuesday. I went to many of these jams.....they were unbelievable...word got out...and the ballroom was literally jammed!

+R. R. Rubin May 21, 1968 was my 6th birthday. While I can remember having a good old time, sadly it was to be another ten years before I began to become more musically savvy and aware of the Dead. Proud to say I drove myself alone to my first show at Alpine Valley, Wi. I believe the show was August 12, 1980, or thereabouts. Ran into many friends who I had no clue were fellow deadheads. It was to be the first of many eye-opening events after that. :)

It's cool how these guys can wander out there in the field, the one that happens to before them, see something interesting, and play around in it, as if there's a camp fire in the middle of it, which there is. You can hear the musically stylistic influences here - with Jefferson Airplane Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady; Grateful Dead Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart. And they mix it all up here together, returning to where the riffs flow; And in the meanwhile work their way back to someplace New; and yet we recognize it for the first time. An example musically is the rendition of "Good Shepherd", where Jorma, Jerry, & Jack & Mickey gather as representing a musically joyous time, with all the rest that comes along with it. It's great to hear this music.

I LOVE the sounds of Mickey Hart's snare drum-rolls, Jack Casady's co-lead bass playing, and the sound of Jerry Garcia playing the Gibson Les Paul like a banjo, with quite a bit of vibrato.

Clearly there are two separate performances on this recording: a first jam for over an hour ending at 1:14:26 (Jerry, Jack, Jorma, Mickey), and a final 16 minutes of the Steve Miller Band. None of the first group of musicians are playing on the Steve Miller tunes.

AMAZING!! Where did you get the info; title, setlist, musician's etc. Was it written on the tape/CD? I know from DEADBASE that there were a number of similar gigs around this time that were billed as "Mickey and the Hartbeats". I have a CD-R labeled as such from The Matrix (San Francisco) Dec.16, 1968. The setlist is listed as: Jam(w/excerpts from Dark Star & China Cat)>Hartbeat Blues> Last Jam. It's all improvisational jamming, no vocals and runs 71min. I think Mickey and the Heartbeats had Phil Lesh also. I no longer have my copy of Deadbase X, so I can't be sure. Anyway, I really love hearing these great musicians mix it up...

Vernal 69 I believe that I heard about the Owsley & Me book, read about a book about "Bear" being released, I wasn't sure of the details such as the author, but it must be the same as I believe it was to be the first biography on Owsley released, for obvious reasons. I wasn't aware of a sister who was also involved with the band, of course there wasn't a whole lot of info on Bear, for "obvious reasons" (lol! Back in 1991 I met Jerelyn Lee Brandelos (sp.?), author of The Grateful Dead Family Album and former girlfriend of Mickey Hart, signing books at a campground full of heads outside Richfield, Ohio. She was with Mickey all through the '70's and went with them to Egypt. One of the heads there was asking about "Bear" and she said he didn't want any obvious pictures of himself in her book because he feared that some mothers against drugs group would hunt him down, lol. She said this in a humorous way but there was obviously some truth to this as she pointed out the page in the book that featured all of the dead family's passport pictures with a black spot in the middle "that was Owsley" but she left it out at his request. She also said that there were two pictures in the book where he was visible, but only hinted at where they were. She also said that he was still present at many shows, usually hanging at.the Greenpeace table. Anyway, Beautiful book if you ever come across it, sadly my signed hardcover copy was taken from me many years back (by a non deadhead), along with my deadbase X, among others, I'm sure the karma came back to them long ago, but I will always have the memory of that night at Dover Lake Campground. I know I went of the subject a bit, but my point was to demonstrate my curiosity about Owsley Stanley III aka Bear, RIP, and how much I anticipate reading the new book!! Thanks for the message ✌🏼💀😁 ---Gary 🐻
