One major thing I noticed in Jerry’s soloing and definitely noticed in your three examples, he never just ascends or descends in a scale or “lick”. There’s a lot of up and down variations in any given phrase. That is something I’ve been really trying to learn. I think it was Stitch Method that said Jerry liked to dance around the note you expected to hear.

That’s such a good observation, it so obvious now that you put it into words this comment was almost as helpful as the video lmao thanks
@JeffWilliamsGuitar Жыл бұрын
That's a great observation. I'm actually planning a video on that exact topic. In the jazz world they call it 'neighbor notes'. It's where you play a fret higher or lower than a chord tone first. That way is like dancing around a melody. Jerry did it all the time and it definitely added to his playful sound.

You make watching guitar education videos genuinely fun again. Even your video itself uses the exact technique you were just talking about.

Yoni knows what’s up! Brilliant insight; that is exactly right-Jeff is super aware of the self-reflexive elements of his videos, and his videos DO what they say. Great insight. You’d make a good literary analyst.

I think of the stuff Jerry plays as three dimensional, like he cerates a 3D abstract shape, other people sound good playing his stuff, but its like sooner or later the difference between them and Jerry starts to become clear......great lessons, all your stuff sounds good, excellent, well played

Hey Jeff. I am so glad you rolled out another 'Dissecting...". On my way to purchasing it right now...I have mentioned to you that I bought all three previous 'Dissectings' courses and they have absolutely changed my playing in profound ways. And not because they ask me to copy Jerry and Bobby (impossible!), which, of course, they do not. They have changed my playing in that they are inching me ever closer to my ultimate goal of sounding like myself. It is a long journey to be sure, but at least I'm enjoying the ride. Thanks again for the knowledge, skill and love you pour into your Dissecting courses -- they are more than worth the price of admission. Always high quality, great clear charts, super tracks, stems, etc. -- very professional packages. I know these will light up any true Dead fan wanting to explore the magic, mystery and miracle that was this band. Nothing like 'em then or since.
@JeffWilliamsGuitar Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks so much and so glad to hear the courses have been that helpful! It might be awhile before I make another unfortunately because I'm now focused an a large course that's all about playing intuitively. It's definitely gonna be my best one yet. Then I plan on getting back to some more Dissecting the Dead later this year. What you just said about the courses was better than what I wrote on my website! haha Would you mind if I used a snippet for a testimonial? And a first name or just initials to go with it? If not, no worries at all. You're kind words and support are more than enough. Thanks.

@@JeffWilliamsGuitar Are you going to make a JG scale patterns and scale sequencing video soon? Does Jerry Garcia "chase root notes, chase 3rds or chase 5ths? Chasing means starting and ending either the root note or 3rd or 5th for each chord change.

HI Jeff , i just found your channel today "amazing " i love the backing tracks really great.. Glad to see some allman brothers.. Question for you , do you do any requests for backing tracks ? I have been looking for months maybe over a year for backing track of the allman Brothers > "Good Clean Fun" .. I think it would be such a great song to play . Is it possible for you to make one ?
@thejamnasium6447 Жыл бұрын
haha, love the skit mang. good stuff. hey this is off topic but I asked this question recently on a super old video and I don't think it ever got answered. at the end of Crazy Fingers live they usually go into some kind of exotic sounding jam, phrygian or something. I was wondering if you knew exactly what that was.
@Orang5 Жыл бұрын
Is that the Arabian Jam?
@FIGGY65 Жыл бұрын
@@Orang5 . I was thinking the same thing, from Grateful Dawg. Now, in the original (HBO?) documentary, IIRC, Jerry, Grisman and his son, and about 5 other artists are JAMMING arabica/Arabia hard for what seems like 15 minutes straight in their home studio, whilst being filmed live- it was a mind blower when I first heard it !

You can have Jerry influences yet put your own style on top as you expressed. John Mayer’s style with Dead and Co is a perfect example. He’s not a Jerry replica. He clearly is combining his blues and pop style with Jerry’s eclectic, improvisational, psychedelic style. It’s a great combination, especially to watch him play live.
