Jerry hated being on stage alone, the 2 shows on 4/10/82 were the only shows he played truly solo since the early 60's. He brought John Kahn up with him for any future shows of this nature. Such a raw performance, his playing his voice and the warped tape

Jerry's voice is so beautifully emotive on these shows from this day. It washes over me like warm river water and feeds my soul with a kind of depth and fullness that words could never aptly do justice to describe. I miss you, Jerry.

I was at this early show. I was 14. It was spiritually revelatory, and that still comes through despite a tape with changing speed issues. Robert Hunter opened the show... I distinctly remember Promontory Rider. Jerry said something along the lines of being terrified. At the time, I didn't realize that this was the only night Jerry ever played solo since the band launched in 65. He called John Kahn in for the rest of the tour. Freight Train was a hidden gem in the set.

What a fantastic experience for a 14 year olds mindset.....still in possession of the last of it's youthful sponge like formative stages, this had to have a fantastic impact on your life, even all these years later, the people attending, the smell of patchouli oil and dusty panama red wafting through the place.....I miss it.....jgb especially....how blessed we are to have these recordings to let us relive our youth over again....all recording artists should adopt these same methods of preserving their legacy's for themselves, of course, but for the fans, I believe, they are ever more important and cherished ...

@@jamesrumbaugh3283 I brought my son to Phil Leah and Friends at the Cap when he was 14 and to a few Wilco shows. Haven’t gotten him to Dead & Co yet, but hopefully soon. Jerry and the Dead shaped me almost as much as my parents did… from devouring everything the beats wrote, to expanding my mind through psychedelics, to awareness of the importance of the rainforests. And they led me back to Dylan, and the music of Coleman, Coltrane and other jazz musicians that I wouldn’t have necessarily understood or appreciated.

@@jonathanrubin3704 Absolutely, my mind and my musical interests blossomed in the warm embrace of late 80's-the end Dead, and jgb. Glad to see you've taken to passing on the good word(s) to another generation of gate keepers/apostles(jk) it is our duty and as I'm it is your honor....nfa

It doesn’t matter how many times I hear Jerry sing and play.... his talent and spirit hits me in the heart and fills me with joy. I hope you know Jerry how loved you are and will ever be for the magnificent person you are. We will meet again someday far far away from where I sit tonight. “Been all around this world!!!!”

I, was at the "late" show, and as I recall, it was "late". Thank you for posting this. It's amazing sometimes the tapes pick up nuances that we did not 'hear' in the audience. I also remember R. Hunter (RIP/BDE) going back and forth with someone in the audience about actually buying his records rather than taping...

only 3,400 views? id imagine this is pretty rare. deep elem blues sounds kinda warped or out of tune or something (the guitar) Havnt listened to the rest yet. Id also imagine that saying there is only one show jerry played solo is like saying that only one planet in the universe has life on it. but still a rare and beautiful thing. ahhh, remember the Capitol Theater is Passaic. For all you Bergin,Hudson Essex New Jersey folks who remeber, WE HAD A BLAST at the capitol. The Capitol closed in the 90's. Probably around when jerry died. Thank you Jerry Thank you Capitol Theater thank you nognuisagoodgnu for posting. It's officially a grateful day and I'm a grateful dude.

Joseph Garrahan Yeah man. That's some pretty gnarly warble, most likely due to the tape being stretched and warped.. or excessive heat, it was probably left in the glove box in July. Either that or the tapedeck's belts are old and wacky. I feel seasick.. The technology already exists to fix the pitch fairly well, but the timing here is affected too. It's not an easy listen. I wonder if any other tapes of this are there that aren't all F'd up.

Yep, the Cap in Passaic was an institution. Staying there all night to wait fro Ticketron tickets, seeing Jerry/Kahn here, as well as.. lotsa folks-Motorhead, Truimph, SVT, Jorma w/Rick Danko n Dr John...Just a great old place.. Urinals big enough to practically stand in, all night Godzilla/Mothra/Rodan fests...was a shame to knock it down.

This was actually one of the worst shows I ever saw Jerry play. I love the man, but this show was so shaky. You can hear the true fans moan at the flubs. Thankfully he turned it around. Not a good time for Jerry. He was wearing plaid that night by the way. And very overweight.

This style of playing is super difficult so you can't blame the guy honestly. He has to play bass, the lead melody and interject chords as he goes. The solos have to outline the harmony enough to keep the train of the song rolling, which gives less freedom. It's a great study tool for playing solo guitar. He did his best.
