Among the best theme songs of all times! The work of a genius. It was also a fine TV show. Great cast and guest stars. Whoever thought of casting older Buddy Ebsen as a detective was really thinking outside of the box. It worked, and I love it. Buddy must have been having the time of his life.

You're half right - he didn't score any individual regular episodes, but he DID score the pilot as well as do the theme music.

My understanding is that Jerry Goldsmith wrote the main theme you hear at the beginning, but that's it.

Goldsmith scored the entire pilot (he has sole credit 'Music by', not 'Theme by') and there is a distinctive feel to all of the cues. Goldsmith was suffering from the anti-composer trend in Hollywood movies at the time (after films like 'Shaft') and was doing a fair amount of TV work. Between 'Patton' (1970) and 'Papillon' (1973) Goldsmith didn't get too much high profile film work. He was unavailable for Schaffner's 'Nicholas and Alexandra' and it was 'Chinatown' that really started his brilliant run of scores to 'The Final Conflict'.

I wrote the index for myself because I wanted to pick one of the theme versions as the intro music a video series. I was 20 when it dawned on me how great this theme is. I’m always looking for ways to force my bimonthly nostalgia obsessions on others. I’ve become an evangelist for past utopias were never actually mine-I never watched a single minute of the show as a kid, but Ioved the theme song from my first hearing. I posted the index here as a joke, expecting negative feedback for not keeping my interpretations to myself. Thanks for your cheering compliment.

The theme song is very fast, powerful and intense. From the bass guitar to the flute. One of my favorites. It sits on the opposite side of the MASH theme, which is very slow, but has that same memorable quality to it.

I've always appreciated themes for the beautiful pieces of music they were, and the incredible effort required by all those musicians. The Gunsmoke theme is also a beautiful piece. By the mid 70s you had just one or two multi-instrumentalists recording all parts themselves, and it was basically the end of most of the "orchestral" themes. An awesome time to be alive!

​@@jayvanslayer2787 I'd hire Barnaby Jones in a minute. He was 10ft tall and bulletproof. The bad guys always underestimated him. He caught on quick and was way ahead of everyone else in about 45 minutes. Those bad guys shot at that man more times than you can count but they always missed. And his marksmanship skills were off the charts. He always put the bullet in a non-lethal part of the body to keep the 1970s-80s censors happy. But I would not hire Jedidiah. He got in some serious situations, yet he never did wear a gun. But I wouldn't care if Barnaby brought him along.

Rockford files was the best PI show. PIs are not rich, so when you see PI shows like BJ and Mannix with new cars all the time, what a joke. Rockford lived in a trailer and drove the same car--that's more like it

the percussion elements do not show up much in the original series. personally I think it a bit strong here but I do like this theme. I always loved the percussion in incidentals(if, that is, the situation called for it). In the first season, Goldsmith did the incidentals as well, I think that changed later. he has that "Planet of the Apes" thing going on at times, but some tracks also shows the flute can be used to give a feeling of discretion and infiltrating spy music should always include them. later seasons overuse bass and percussion in the theme. This is Barnaby Jones, it is not a rock fest.
