It's 1980 again and I'm listening to Jerry Jeff in concert in Adelaide, South Australia, twin city to Austin, TX. I live on farmland now, an old man too poor to give up his office job. But in my dreams, at least, I've always rambled highways a free man with Scamp and Stoney.

In '95, i was living way out in the hills west of dripping springs in a buddy's new garage apt while his home was being built. He had turned me onto Texas Music in the 80s. One weekend he was home and JJ was playing Gruene Hall. He told, in typical JJ style, "come on, we'll head on down to Gruene." We took the back roads and enjoyed an incredible show at an incredible venue. It was a show just like the cd, live at gruene hall.' Both my kids called me as soon as they heard he'd 'gone on down the road.' I think the music of the late 80s and 90s were his very best offerings. Like JJ, I'm not truly a Texan, but we got here as fast as we could.

This song is what I call a 'deep cut' off of o really great album by JJW. It's a song you would never hear played on the 'canned music' radio stations. Unless it was a renegade indie station or maybe a college radio station. I dedicate this song to you Terry Daniel. And to all those other free spirits who are no longer confined on this earth.

I met Harry Stoneback when he came to Ambergris Caye Belize for a Jerry Jeff show. I helped him get back to his hotel after the show. Rolling his wheelchair through the empty streets of San Pedro. When we got to the Holiday Hotel where he asked if we wanted to sit and talk and we did. For almost an hour looking out over the Caribbean he told us stories of his trips through Italy and his early travels as a musician. He is an amazing man. I love this JJW song.

Year befire my new wife and I hit 10,000 miles around the USA in my old 57 Chev 4 dr on our honeymoon in 26 states, playin songs like this on an old Sony TC10 cassette deck under the dash. The last 2,000 miles through 8 states and 2 Canadian provinces saw us towing a 68 Ford Station wagon full of my wifes belongings. I am sure JJW would have found some humour in that.

Being 62, and having all the memories of being on the road in my youth, living life, this always moves me into memories of yesteryear. much of JJW's music occupies my heart, I still remember the first time we saw him perform at the old Kenny's Castaways uptown in NYC. It was before Coors was available east of the Rockies and we laughed at the cases of Coors stacked in the bar; just about the time of the JJW album (with LA Freeway). Our band had been playing Mr Bojangles for a few years already after having heard the WBAI recording. What can I say? I love this man's music, so much of it was background scenery in my life.

Agreed. A most underrated artist. His vocals and song-pace are so pleasant. I treasure all JJW music.

Kerouac must have inspired this song, or maybe Jack heard this song and wrote "The Road". I'm so glad I stuck out my thumb from point A to B. They just cant take it away.,

Mr. Burttram, could you please let me know which album this version of Stoney came from? This is my favorite version outside of the 1986 Austin City Limits Live version. Thank you!

I don't think this album was ever released by itself on CD or Spotify. There is a very good recording of the whole album (It's A Good Night For Singing) on KZbin. I downloaded the audio and converted it into MP3 files. I've been listening to it pretty much nonstop for the last week. I've got the original album on a prerecorded cassette that I bought back in the early 80s.

@@jerrybandy3827 I have the orig. vinyl I bought, I think it was way back in 1976. I remember buying it and going home to listen to it, I was already a fan since '73. I knew I wouldn't be disappointed, just about wore that and many other albums of Jerry Jeff's out. I still have them, wouldn't sell them for the world. Man, This last Friday brought some real tough news! Won't be to long, "The Wheel" will be taking me home too. Be missing ya for sure, old pard.....till we meet again, thanks for the music of my life!!

Nope. I've actually met Harry Stoneback. He came to Camp Belize back in 2009. I had the pleasure of pushing him in his wheelchair down Middle Street to the Holiday Hotel where he was staying. He asked if we'd like to sit and talk a while and he told us of his travels all over the world. It was a magical night on the shore of the Caribbean.
