I can't really blame him man they should have rehearsed that a little more. Couldn't find the beat and guessed wrong on the chord changes and switching tempo 3 times.
@dannydine5263 Жыл бұрын
I later heard the interview and found out there was no rehearsal and they didn't seem to be familiar with the hit version by Janis and Jerry Lee doesn't play it anything like that anyway plus they might have been confused because it's not standard rock and roll changes. No wonder why it trainwrecked Rehearsals are super important.

Oh, mercy…I had waited so long to see this and could not get through it. Personal memory; I saw Jerry in ‘97 with a very capable and excellent drummer and the SAME thing happened during the tempo change in No Headstone On My Grave. For the LIFE of him, he could not find the beat. I was watching with a friend, a drummer himself, and he put his hands over his face, saying, “Oh god, It’s the worst feeling ever. He won’t get it back.” Jerry was incredulous and everyone onstage was trying to coax him back on track but it was a very public shambles.

Everyone knows that this song was written by Kris Kristofferson and Janis Joplin had a huge hit with it just as she passed away in 1970. Jerry Lee's version hit #1 on the US Country charts in 1971 and Gordon Lightfoot's version did the same in Canada. Roger Miller recorded it in 1969 and took it to #12 on the US Country charts. Many others have recorded it, but Waylon Jennings seems to me to have made it very personal. All of these versions are on youtube. Give a listen sometime.

I felt so bad for Jerry Lee there. I’m sure he wanted to yell or just stomp off. The band didn’t know what they were doing. It’s sounded like they were playing 3 different songs at once in different cords and beats. Near the end I guess Jerry Lee just decided to try to make the best of a bad situation. If I didn’t know better I thought the band might have been pranking him but no not on live TV. 😂😬

as a musician who sings and leads bands while playing guitar...this is hard to watch ... The band is all over the place missing his ques...Jerry slammed the piano door so the drummer could hear the beat accent hahaha and so he could show his disapproval. NOW i know why his interview was so odd and why Dick made a point to say they didint rehers the song... "The Killer" was in a funky state of mind because the drummer was off a bunch of times and Jerry couldn't get into the groove to just be himself and perform...on top of millions watching at home. I thikn the main issue was his piano was too quiet...and he wasn't playing chords much so the band couldn't hear him well enough to let him lead them...i feel bad for people having to deal with live sound back then...today its tough too but back then tech was just coming around. its one reason the beatles stopped playing live. STILL it coudl have been fixed in they coudl have started over and said "hey wait now we want to give the people a good show lets take it form the top boys"
