40 years ago, I was standing at the guard booth at A & M records, waiting to gain admittance and a guy in a huge gold Rolls Royce drove up and looked at my friend and I and "I'm Burt Bacharach", I'm here to record." And without waiting, he drove right through to the lot. Rest in Peace all you awesome songwriters and thank you.

One of the couples was Pat and Bob Sheppard. Of course, Bob Sheppard was the great Yankee Stadium announcer as well as the New York Giants football games at Yankee Stadium and the original Giants Stadium. He was one of the great gentlemen. Sadly, Pat Sheppard passed away within a year of this show's airing.

For lovers of contemporary music of the 50s and 60s, this is an impressive clip. Norman Gimbel wrote English lyrics to bossa nova songs, including Girl from Ipanema and Water to Drink. Leiber's song Houndog needs no introduction.

And most impressive of all Gimbel wrote the lyrics to "Killing Me Softly"

What a gem! I watched this show in the summer or when I was home sick from school. Seeing these guys before their increased media visibility is fascinating.

From this classic American game show Play Your Hunch on NBC, this clip is from a 1960 episode with a guest appearance by the songwriters (Jerry, Burt & Norman). 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

Great clip; thank you so much for posting it. Sadly, we lost Jerry Leiber on August 22, 2011. He was a legend in the music world and will be missed.

I just saw Burt Bacharach in concert on Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills to a good house. He’s 91, still writing songs, and going strong.

The clip probably doesn't exsist but Robert Redford recalled on 'Inside the Actors Studio' that his first television appearence was on this show

My God... was Burt ever handsomer?! You could hear the audience gasping in disbelief everytime "Mr. Y" was mentioned, almost as if they thought he was a Too-Good-to-be-True plant.

Merv actually sang one of Burt's songs, "Along Came Joe." Fine voice.

Thanks. Quite interesting, particularly Leiber and Bacharach.

Why do you exclude Gimbel, the author of "Killing Me Softly" ?
@13loomisst73Ай бұрын
@@Brandespada For the simple reason that they interest me infinitely more.
@BrandespadaАй бұрын
@@13loomisst73 Maybe you have no reason to connect more deeply with Gimbel, but as a Brazilian I simply love the fact that he put the lyrics in English to arguably our most internationally known Brazilian song of the 60s, Girl from Ipanema, sung by the one and only Frank Sinatra!

Can you post the rest of this show, please?

I felt a little sorry for Burt. That was before he became THE songwriter of the last part of the century. Also Merv didn't do "Magic Moments" justice; Como gave it more sparkle. (I'm perfectly aware Merv COULDN'T do "Magic Moments" justice in the few seconds he had!)

Yea Burt really didn't have big hit's until around 1961 or so....."Tower of Strength" Gene McDaniel comes to mind
