I saw Jerry Lewis when I was a kid, in the Delicate Delinquent 1957 and was hooked, he's pure entertainment without vulgarity. He's slapstick, had a unequalled vocal ability, a great looking guy, he could be stupid, clever, played mind games just about all types of comedy or even straight, pathos and I loved him.

"Jerry Lewis was the most gifted intuitive person ever. My first recollection of Jerry is very clear. 1947, Boston. It was a totally ad libbed thing, That's what made it brilliant. It was this goofball guy interrupting his friend from singing. His friend started to sing and he just kept interrupting him. It was mayhem. Hysterical mayhem. People were on the floor laughing. I had never seen anything as funny in my laugh as that. Never forgot it. It was revelatory." - Carl Reiner.

Just like Chaplin, Jerry Lewis gives the audience something beyond laughter. He gives us poetry in motion. A spectacle not only for the mind, but for the heart as well. That's what sets Jerry Lewis apart from average comedians, and also what makes him so disliked by people who see comedy as an "only-for-laughs" experience.

I'm always stunned by the way americans seem to hate the comic genius that Jerry Lewis is. If you take a look at his work, it's clearly a genius. Spontaneous but measured, there's a brilliant timing in his gesture. Take a look back at what he did in the Comedy Hour, how's it possible not to laugh!

I'll tell you why. Many Americans are moralists, spiteful, and fear uniqueness. They prefer lies and deception. They love if someone is less intelligent or smart or good- looking than them so they don't feel threatened. Some Americans lack, traditions, culture, compassion, and good manners. Thank God not all of them, but unfortunately there are some! Lewis was a genius! Wonderful guy!

"Jerry Lewis made movie after movie after movie and people would go crazy for this thing he was doing. He's like the Beatles of movie comedy." - Alec Baldwin. "Jerry Lewis is a crossover from vaudeville and burlesque. When silent films ended and talking comics really hit, and he feels like he's straddling that. There's classic clowning in him and there's this insanity. It's just sidesplittingly crazy funny and it's just him being Jerry." - Billy Crystal.

No, they just don't like anyone to be too successful. It's the tall poppy syndrome - they build you up and then when you're on top they can't wait to cut you down. Not sure I beleive more men like him than women - maybe the humor but most female Jerry Lewis lovers think he was extremely attractive. Don't see how being Jewish has anything to do with it. It's not just his comedic 'genius' he's loved for. The man is multitalented and some people don't like that. No one can match his talent!

Y'all Germans? Do you guys agree with the French that Jerry Lewis is a comic genius? We Americans never took it quite that far. But I think as time passes we're gonna come around and see that the French were right.

I think he is :) I grew up with his films (in Australia)...sadly though, he'll only be known as a genius when he's gone (so often the case)...the French in particular (also the Italians) adore him as they can relate to his physicality, as it was very much like their cabaret scene around 1900 - In the USA he was more often than not, an embarrassment, little more than a loud/zany, and not particularly funny, children's comic. Another interesting thing I've found is more men than women like him :)

Interesting that more men like him than women. That's how it is with The Three Stooges. Hmm. I wonder if Jerry Lewis ever met The Three Stooges. Jerry Lewis was wildly popular in the fifties in America. But I guess calling him a genius feels to Americans like calling The Three Stooges geniuses. Just doesn't quite fit right. But I think Lewis was deeper than the stooges, soitently! A lot of American guys HATE Jerry Lewis. I think it's probably antisemitism for the most part.

È che troppi di voi americani siete profondamente tristi e ignoranti. After all, when we Europeans had Greek and Roman culture, Humanism, the Renaissance, the French Revolution and so much more you were still playing the Indians. Even if you then exterminated them all. Ah ... do you know that you modern Americans are ALL of European descent? English, French, Italians, etc. But what do you know about the culture that you eat overcooked spaghetti with ketchup?
