Mandolin 101 -- Cost to current Mozingo Music Students is FREE, General Public Pricing is $5.00 a seat, reserve in advance.
10:00am to 10:55am on 5/7/2011.
This master class will focus on folks that play mandolin or want to play mandolin and never have time for lessons or a place to take them. Jerry told us he generally has total beginners leave playing basic tunes with great success. This is one to bring your young adults, kids & grandkids to so they can try mandolin out for themselves. Must provide your own mandolin.
(A Note From Eric: For all guitar players, here's a way to learn an alternative instrument quickly. Learning an alternative instrument like mandolin can only benefit you in the long run since a lot of it transfers over, so if you own a mandolin and never use it dust off it off and let Jerry show you how to pick it.)

Some really good information in this short video. When he was discussing 7th chords the camera angle prevented me from seeing exactly what Jerry was doing with his fretting hand. I had to watch the video again before I felt I understood what about switching to a 7th chord.

I'm looking at that G shape and if it is 3rd fret E string, 2nd fret A string 4th fret D string and 5fth fret G string then that doesn't work in standard tuning. It would have to be 5th fret D string and 4th fret on G string. What am I not seeing here? is the mandolin tuned differently or am I seeing the finger positions wrong?
@bkindglassworks
@bkindglassworks 6 жыл бұрын
You want your ring finger on the 5th fret of the D strings (G note) and pinky on the 7th fret of the G (D note).

This is a challenge for a lot of beginners; BIG stretch. The "Mel Bay Easy Chord" would be just fingers 1 & 2 (same place) and open G and D strings. Great for Folk songs; not so good for Blue Grass.

It's more important to understand chord shapes, and not specific chord names with mandolin. That's because they're all movable, which is part of the theory Jerry is explaining. He is using the G chop chord shape, or the two finger G chord. www.mandolincafe.com/cgi-bin/chords/ch.pl?chord=G

Some good information in this video, but I disagree with his approach to learning chords. The 4-finger closed position bluegrass chop chord is a huge obstacle for people, especially people with small hands, and it may be impossible for many children. Plus, that chord is really a bluegrass convention. It's really not useful at all in any other style of music. I suppose if you're only interested in pure bluegrass and no other style of music, there might be some merit to it.

Perhaps that is why he showed the easier 2 finger version also. He explained how difficult it is for a beginner to make a 4 finger G chord. He is a bluegrass mandolin player teaching some basic bluegrass method.

Definitely not a good class for beginners. Trying to teach people a G chord (bluegrass) the difficulty will discourage people and most will give up. There are more ways of doing it than just one. Most will think I can not make that chord and just give up the instrument. I am sure there is a better method of teaching a beginning class than this.

I fail to see where pointing out the obvious warrants the "need to learn manners". Perhaps the instructor needs to respect his audience/students/and the most successful music publisher in American history. I may not be a Mel Bay devotee but I would not slag him. This instructor is self absorbed. Were I a student in this group, I would have walked.

@@melindamanthey2757 Were you to walk out of the class Melinda it would have become instantly more fun. This instructor just taught us how to turn a two finger chord into a I, IV, V pattern for every key! I did not get that from my four Mel Bay books... Mr. Rosa delivers the best 13:48 Mando 101 lesson on KZbin. Worth rewinding the play along sections.

...it is so ridiculous to see anyone teach the (G) closed- chord formation in that manner; many can't stretch their little finger to the 7th fret ! The simplest and best way is to place little finger on 5th fret D string, and ring finger on 4th fret (G) string ! Then, with 1st and 2nd fingers in their proper places, this closed-chord formation can be moved anywhere on finger board, i. e. , where space will permit !

i see creative criticism all around,i studied physics,math,digital,analog etc,for electronics engineering as a technician,i had/have more than one source to get information from,see that i said BOOKS,i DID NOT HAVE the internet to see the plethora of freebie lessons,i also play guitar,when i started the internet was still in military hands,stop fucking whining ,you need a few perspectives to learn,one news paper gives one view of the news(mostly fake lefty ideolo"i"logical BS). SO cheer up folks,taking away one piece of info is a help,i hope i did not offend anyone,if so,"OH DEAR ,HOW SAD,NEVER MIND".
