Wonderful episode! Just a thought… it would be great to have more episodes with you and Ophelia painting in oils.. she is such an awesome lady! I have a feeling if she uses this medium and becomes comfortable. She might just fall in love with the process. Warm Regards, Martina Emmy, Enjoy your adventure in France painting to your hearts contend.

This is the BEST tutorial I've seen about pairing down oil painting to the essentials but giving options along the way. I'm still not sure about how to safely store rags and solvents in a home cheaply though (i.e. without buying a fire cabinet or trash can). Maybe I missed that part...

LOL That was not my intention, but I think it's more important that everyone find the medium that speaks to your soul so you can create with joy/not get frustrated and give up!

A lot of us sand and scrape through paints so they can be toxic though so just be cautious

Aw I am so bummed I missed this! Ophelia we love you so so much ❤️ Always always ask vet about pet safety - but also it is safer to assume pets and paints don't mix. Can confirm. MSDS and AP safety ratings are guidance for HUMANS!! It can be totally different for pets in terms of safe vs toxic. (And will vary by species. And will sometimes seem totally nonsensical...) For example we obviously cannot drink seawater, but cats can! Kidneys of steel! Bodies are weird. I am not compatible with oils. This definitely made it less scary, but I'm the weirdo who leaves phthalo blue footprints throughout the carpeted apartment? More than once? 🤣 🤣 6-12mo cure time stresses me out! Thanks for another lovely stream(:

If Ophelia has social media for her art, would it be possible to share it? I'd love to see her work.

Can Gamvar be used sooner?
@MissCakesArt2 жыл бұрын
I always suggest going by the label and manufacturer's recommendation! On Gamblin's website this is what they suggest: "Gamvar may be brush applied when the painting is dry to the touch and firm in its thickest areas. For some oil paintings, that might take two weeks, for others, 2 months. To check if it’s dry, gently press your nail into the thickest part of your painting."

Does linseed oil have a fire hazard?
@MissCakesArt2 жыл бұрын
Yes! The chemical reaction of it curing causes heat, which can spontaneously combust. If you use solvents: that is an accelerant, making fire spread faster than normal. It's not something that happens very often, but it can! I just want you all to protect yourselves, your families, and your homes/studios! No need to be afraid and think it's going to combust within 5 minutes: it's never happened in my own personal studio, but I do have a friend who it has happened to once (and she paints solvent-free every single day) so you should be aware.

If rags with oil paint are a fire hazard why aren’t canvases and panels?
@ambersnodell98942 жыл бұрын
Nevermind I see it’s because heat can get trapped inside the rag

Why do lower price point oil paints from craft stores have a grit in them…. Is this a cheap filler?
@christinejoyce31135 ай бұрын
Cadmium and cobalt pigments are just as toxic in acrylic and watercolours, just because its in a water based medium don't be fooled into thinking its not toxic.

That's correct! It's important to always utilize studio safety!
