Jerry Sloan's 90s Utah Jazz Offense Part 2 - Low Post & Split Action

In Part 2 of this series on Jerry Sloan's offensive system, we cover how the late 90s Utah Jazz maximized their efficiency on offense via the low post. Jerry Sloan was a master of punishing double teams on Karl Malone in the post with other players cutting, as well as Split Action which the Golden State Warriors dynasty perfected.

These are seriously so good! One of the beauties of Sloan's system was that every single player on the floor was a threat for a cutting layup or dunk. I always wondered why that was, and you have explained it so well. This style of basketball required so much discipline and team chemistry. It also required a lot of highly physical play with all the screens being set. In my opinion, that's why it was so fun to watch.

I had a strong feeling that steve kerr (who coaches the warriors) took the split cuts from sloan's jazz; everyone mistakenly thinks he took it from his bulls days with tex winters' triangle offense. The key is that kerr knew it was an absolute pain to defend stockton and hornacek when they ran split cuts.

That’s interesting because both of the teams ran split cuts, but you’re right it was a little different with Stockton and Hornacek

I wish we still had a true flex offense in the NBA. Now it is one pick and roll and three guys standing outside the three point line. I miss the good days of the NBA before chucking three pointers was the only offense in the entire league.

The Denver Nuggets do a bunch of Flex action when Murray is playing. The Warriors really ran a ton of Split action as well.

Great suggestion! No promises but I will definitely keep it in mind. I probably want to do a couple other old school teams first but eventually that would be great to cover the mid 2000s Suns
