I think it's a good thing that Greg didn't go for Michael for this, as he kept his connections with Michael right before Michaels blow up into superstardom, so he would've made a whole lot more money by just moving on and continuing to work with Michael, rather than demanding the 10% and burning his bridges with him.
@MichaelMeighu2 жыл бұрын
that doesn't really change the fact how musicians get ripped off.

Wait, I wish I can remember which interview, but I seem to recall Greg P previously saying Quincy was a factor in the decision after MJ spoke w/ him, something along the lines of Quincy had this “rule” on when to give writing credits vs arrangement & Greg’s part he considered as the latter since everything else was there. In this tho Greg is saying Quincy didn’t know about it? Not sure now what to believe.

This is a good example of how the music industry slowly demoralizes you to the point where you don’t even know what’s right or what’s wrong anymore.

KZbin might punish the channel for playing that music without permission. There are better versions of all RBMA interviews on their website. Which part? _You know the part!_ The instrumental break after the second chorus, where Greg plays a synthesizer solo that sounds like electric guitar. 🎸 The part where the music video shows *3 Michaels* 🕴🏾🕴🏾🕴🏾 dancing together.

Im just surprised that when Mj is alive these people including Quincy didn't say all those grudges they have to Mj.. WELL.. Royalty earnings or being MD Touring?
@MichaelMeighu2 жыл бұрын
Big musicians ripping off smaller ones is quite common.
@crnkmnky Жыл бұрын
The tour is over. Michael Jackson's estate is still collecting royalty payments, but Greg is probably not. Michael never released a live solo album, so Greg couldn't receive royalties for that either.

IMO, Greg shouldn't really get a writing credit but maybe a producers or arrangers share. Every artist is different per these issues. Didn't they share credit for Behind The Mask?

So Greg said 10%, Mj said okay.. Sent the contract stating the 10% and then Mj just changed his mind? Hmmmmmm. Greg is smart. He knows for sure who decided in the end that time.. Manager, Quincy or whoever, but definitely not Mj. Mj is just too kind to explain himself and contradict the one who really decided. Common sense #justsaying
@MichaelMeighu2 жыл бұрын
You buy that? MJ was a cut throat businessman. Don't believe that "so kind" garbage. It was all part of his PR 'act'. Musicians get ripped off all the time when they work with big artists. Come on - MJ says "hey lets songwrite" - what you gonna say? "no"? lol.... There was a whole group of musicians who wrote BAD with him - and they didn't get any song writing credit. That's just the music industry for you. Its the same with books. You think Donald Trump really wrote his book, "The art of the deal"?
@crnkmnky Жыл бұрын
That's not "common sense," that's wishful thinking. The ultimate decision belonged to Michael, regardless of whatever influence managers and producers may have held.

he did a key arrangement on the song. Essentially wrote a little filler part to give the song a better cadence. He asked for a writing credit for 10%. It was agreed upon but then turned down. I love MJ but he could be very shrewd. Loving but shrewd. In all fairness 10% would be a lot for what he did contribute. I think MJ was just exceptionally proud of what he wrote and given it was his first major adult solo record and was going to be a single he wanted people to respect him as a songwriter and if there was a "co writer" people would have criticized him for it. And to be Honest he didnt co write it.

If you look up the song on here on youtube (I'll add the link and hope it goes through), go to minute 2:32 and you'll hear what is called the "C-section) of the song. It's a strong musical interlude necessary to complete the song, especially if you want it to be a commercial success. In this song the C section has no lyrics but it is no less important to the parts that do. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4a1g6CNqceHmNE

WORD!! I'm of 2 minds about the situation. The music industry is notorious in it's tradition of ripping off artists & gangster culture, but it'll never stop. In that case I think Greg did the right thing, it yielded him a life long career with the top of the industry+Michael. Also, people forget, too, that Michael's father worked very well with the gangsters of the industry (incl. Motown) & as much as Michael was the innocent in his heart & didn't really like the gangster culture, he was raised in it naturally & knew how to do it. In 1 respect I'm glad Quincy mentioned that Mike could be Machiavellian so I can believe he wasn't always stepped all over at all times, only some of the time, which is the way it goes. But yeah, that Bridge...if only Greg hadn't been so young as to give that away. I bet he never let THAT happen again!

Royalty payments can continue after death. Tour salaries do not.
@T1000-s4j3 жыл бұрын
So after touring extensively and bring part of Michael's life for so long, he goes on about this? I don't think he should get a writer's credit anyway. He arranged a bridge. He didn't contribute to the main body of the record or the lyrics.

session musicians used to get jacked all the time. Even Prince did it. People might shit on songs today having 26 songwriters, but at least it's accurate.

In Greg’s own story in another interview, he said MJ consulted Quincy & Quincy had a “rule” about when it was considered writer’s credit or just arrangement. It was considered arrangement because most of the song was already there serving as basis for his bridge. Also, when Greg asked about Behind The Mask, MJ gave it to him to use for his own recording. I’d say MJ returned the favor & then some.
@oemisc28803 жыл бұрын
@@benwagner2000 In MJ’s case he could come up with complete compositions with just his voice, including instruments, which served as instructions for session musicians. If you watch videos of him at work, he directed the musicians on what he wanted to hear so he was quite different from other artists
