Brilliant idea. There are so many people dependant on wheelchairs that can't go walking with their friends or partner. The fact that the "Rig" is a fraction of the price of other available alternatives really opens up a new world to many, especially younger ones. Thank you.

I betcha they make snow socks that would fit the tires of the "not a wheel chair". It's worth looking into. Incredible video BTW

I wonder if the range of an electric wheeler could be increased even more if they used Ackerman-type steering, whether the front wheels swivel "proportionally" for smoother turns (that's how modern-day "reversed-configured" or "one wheel in the back and two in the front" motor-trikes steer), instead of just being linked directly together, allowing for lower rolling-resistance on turns?

Very much soo, but this is about easy servicing and easily available parts. Maybe they can do that when they are bigger more established company. But not soo early in the stage if there is already decent batteries available.
@pooounderscoreman
@pooounderscoreman 4 жыл бұрын
@@Neojhun I get what you're saying and that's totally valid if the batteries are designed to be easily removed but it looks like they have been cable tied on. Custom batteries can be done quite easily and simply once you have a nickel tab welder. The tougher part might be finding a suitable enclosure or 3D printing an enclosure. You're right though.

As a disabled veteran this could take me places I never thought of going before. I have a Perombil M3 that the VA got for me and it has been a big help because the regular wheelchair was killing my shoulders going up ramps and running out of breath while going around a store. The only thing that make makes my life difficult is I can't go to a park or even my own yard without getting stuck in the sand or wet grass because of the wheels spinning and having to get someone to pull me out. I can see where, "The Rig": It's Not a Wheelchair could open my life to a lot more things because I would no longer stuck to a sidewalk. In SW Florida we have a lot of nature parks and with the "The Rig": It's Not a Wheelchair I could go places the Permobil can't go.

I could see many styles of these coming out. I used to build pedicabs/ trike rickshaws. Driver in the front and bench seat in the back. Do not knock the gas powered idea. Honda makes small quiet generators. Adding two deep cycle marine battery AGM sealed not flooded batteries. You could basically make a semi all terrain camping vehicle in other models. As a critic to the large wheel model with all the free space in the middle. Making it wider so her wheel chair fits inside the wheels, 2) roll bar safety five point seat belt. Head light and brake/ tail lights / running lights perhaps turn signals if nothing else as options. A four seater Surry version. The fold down handle I think needs a different method for unhooking the handle. For people who are too heavy I could see that being a issue in releasing the handle . Some sort of sun canopy. Granted you could make a high end / Tesla model. Do not be afraid to do that people are already paying three times more for less giving them three times more for the same price is also good. A four wheel model / boat ATV tires. All around you two are amazing. Amazing job for the price the smile on her face was priceless. Check out Honda generators maybe they can help sponsor your idea by using a camping senario. Don't be afraid to reach out to Elon/Tesla you were inspired by Tesla see if you can inspire him. Make sure you have patents if you do not have them. Utility patents, design patents whatever. Oh yeah along with seat belts in case of a roll over some sort of leg restraints may be needed for the adrenaline junkie. Electric off road ATVs for the handicapped thrill seekers. Strategically placed bars may be a nuisance to some but to others it may mean freedom and independence. Do not be afraid to make a wheel chair , electric wheel ATV and trailer, camping kit that all works together combo . Small cars can pull trailers to. Seeing her get out of her car and put that wheel chair together was awesome for what it was. Watching how she was hitting those curbs you better get busy because I think she wants more. With freedom comes risk; overconfidence generally leads to accidents. Adding a secondary charging system. Solar/ generator added two the front wheels smooth flat surfaces you do not need four wheel drive have the back power wheels and the front power generator wheels with selection power drive/ power generating. I know more weight more money. But further distance for the long hauls. Can some one in a wheel chair with no use of their legs be able to go camping alone for a week end or a week Go off road/ trail riding, camping, alone I think they can pretty comfortably. Lower paraplegic camp grounds with off road / and trail riding based off your bike and use her as a guide as to what she would need to be able to go camping alone. Design a tent she can put together from a wheel chair alone if she can do it she will inspire many others to do it and get out of the house. Rental options camp sites , obstacle courses, nature trails. Rental cabins, government grants, more donations more research and development.

What's cool is that it is a mobility platform that pretty much anyone would look at and think first "I want to ride in one of those" and not "That's a wheelchair". Cambry for example can ride around and get attention because she's a young woman in a fun outdoor vehicle and not attention because she is a disabled person in a wheelchair. It's also great that it is more affordable. I look forward to seeing more affordable versions as well as kit upgrades to allow new functionality, like a way to scissor the mid (dorsal) section up and down in height, or a scissor the left right (sagittal) sections up for height and ability to fit in narrower spots, or perhaps kits to make it super easy to load/unload into a road vehicle (or be towed by one?). And perhaps it's OK to make some more expensive carbon fiber models for those that can swing the cost.

Or different wheels? Chains over the tyres?
@JRP3
@JRP3 4 жыл бұрын
@edwong3 Sure that could happen but would add significant cost. Maybe just make the seat adjustable so it could slide further back to put more weight over the rear in low traction situations. Low cost solution.
@JRP3
@JRP3 4 жыл бұрын
@edwong3 As I said allowing the seat to move would be a low cost solution which could be applied only when needed. Chances are if the rear is slipping you're barely moving so steering would not be much of a problem if the front end was unloaded a bit. Basically I'm thinking you're slipping going up a hill so you shift the seat back until you get to the top then slide it back forward. Simple, easy, almost free. Sure, have a dual motor option, but my solution works for the low end models as well. Also when going up a hill the front motor would only be putting traction to a single wheel, while moving the seat back would give better traction to both the rear wheels because of the solid axle.
@JRP3
@JRP3 4 жыл бұрын
@edwong3 I've already explained why steering degradation is not a serious issue, continue to pretend it is if you wish. There has to be some adaptability built into the seating and steering already for different sized riders. Making it able to move an extra 8-10 inches or so would not be the difficult task you imagine and would be enough to bias the weight to the rear, when needed. It would be simple to make the handle bars adjustable as well if they aren't already. I'm sorry you seem unable to grasp the basics of this idea. It's easy, cheap, and practical.
@JRP3
@JRP3 4 жыл бұрын
@edwong3 I'm sorry you can't see the simplicity and cost effectiveness of my solution for those who can't afford or don't want the expense of an extra motor, drive axles, differential, and the engineering involved. Peace out.

Although still a wee bit pricey, I can see a use case for this in the developing world, manufactured via licensing agreements with charities and NGO's; particularly in relationship to access to education in rural areas as lack of mobility usually makes access to education impossible. Might work out cheaper too since labour costs are lower in the developing world.

This seems to be a very cool vehicle, even for non-disabled persons, because it seems you can carry a lot of weight easily on trips. Eg some peole go an a walk in the woods or hills, one person can carry the tents and the proviant for the camp to the desired location and start building the camp. when the other people arrive there, everithing is ready and their backpacks have lesser weight for their walk...

As a nurse I worked in the Medical Equipment industry for awhile and much of the expense for w/c was just plain overpriced profiteering off the insurance and Medicaid industries. Made me so angry when the w/c fitters wrote up the purchase orders for power chairs....sometimes 15-20k..and that was 20years ago! Could have bought a car for that. Will be so happy to see the “insurance” industry go Bye Bye...they are the reason for exorbitant medical costs.
