Today we find out if Rivian really installed 7777 batteries inside their Electric Truck. I've always been curious how many tiny batteries it takes to move a massive truck. And today we are with Munro Live to find out. Check out the 4680 battery teardown HERE: • What's Inside a Tesla ... they have a super cool channel. I was like a kid in a candy shop exploring all of the different electric vehicles Munro has taken apart. Super glad they let me come be a part of the battery module teardown.

It's quite striking how simple it all is compared to a 4 wheel drive, combustion-engined equivielent. It would be cool to see the Rivian parts all laid out next to a completely disassembled Toyota Tacoma or a similarly sized pickup truck to the Rivian. Thanks for sharing Zach.

In terms of how it works I would say it's simple. But when you account for the amount of engineering and time that was invested in the battery technology, I'm not so sure we could still say that.

@@JorgTheElder Well, that is assuming that the batteries are more readily replaceable going forwards, because manufacturers won't be able to keep up with the demand from users to constantly replace worn down batteries on cars after 5-7 years, or roughly 250KM.

This collab was the stuff of dreams, so glad you both came together on this one. I live 22 miles from the Rivian plant in Bloomington/Normal, and as a Chevy Bolt owner, glad to have EV innovation close to home. Hope to afford one of these some day.

The minute Zack said "9 different battery modules", I was thinking: "It can't be 7777 batteries then, 7777 doesn't divide evenly by 9" (because 7+7+7+7=28 doesn't divide evenly by 3) I wonder if they added the flashlight specifically to make the number of batteries 7777 instead of 7776.

I have seen cells which have "more" cooling like some of the BMW ones, but I like the approach Rivian took with one flat cooling plate. Making all electrical connections on the top/outside, they probably manage a pretty good thermal conductivity to the cooling plate. I am sure the overall cooling performance will be great.

This shows why electric vehicles are not yet ready to replace the combustion engine. The expense involved with repair is out of reach for most. If a cell goes bad you wouldn’t be able to replace the single cell. Love the direction we are headed though! Hopefully these things become more affordable and easier to repair.

With the tonneau cover I'm thinking they could of used the same window motor to bring up the boards as it pushes them as well, or else when it's retracting the boards, the same motor could push down the springs as they comeback in. Both ways precise enough to keep it all tight.

Coupla notes Zack, they be 21700 cells (21mm x 700mm), and, though drained to around 32 volts, it's not the voltage that kills (going on that static - from a car door, door nob etc - can be many tens of thousands of volts) it's the Amps, even 02. Amp (200 mA) CAN kill instantly... So, it depends on how many amps were still in that battery, hence the gloves and plastic tools I guess... 🤔😏 😎🇬🇧

No, it has't gotten simpler at all, we've just developed far more complex fabrication technology that allows us to do these things in a more straightforward way. Compare a CRT to a LCD. The CRT is quite complicated in theory, because it's made out of simple things. The LCD is simpler in theory, but it would've been impossible to make a few decates back.

Wasn't going to say anything at first, but... power from the batteries has to go thru the inverters before going to the motor (not a direct feed); and it's not 400 volts per batter pack, but closer to 44 volts (likely closer to 46), and then 9 in series gives you the 400 volts. *edit: 36 volts for a discharged pack makes sense, but it's not down from 400, rather the amp/hr capacity has been drained (so "no" current flow from handling them).

That's pretty cool. The Rivian EV truck is very impressive. However the power retractable bed cover issue is very disappointing given how well designed the rest of the truck is. Rivian could not figure out that it should have a more powerful motor or maybe two motors on it? Sometimes things should be left manual. I have never heard of anybody having trouble with a manually retractable bed cover.
