WN pro z the LEAST amount of shift. Have tried 5 of the top brands and due to easier color matching i replaced all acrylic with WN. Not perfect but better than others and the slower dry time w/o any medium additions makes it my go to for acrylics. So thankful "Prove its" are back.

Having used many acrylic brands I found the W&N Professional acrylics to have the least amount of color shift over all. If you are looking for an acrylic with the least amount of color shift then go with W&N. I did notice a color shift with their Ultramarine Blue,,,,but that was the only color that had the shift...I just switched the Ultramarine out with Pthalo Blue Red shade.....works well.

@JoyceHAnderson17 If I remember correctly, the W&N pro Ultramarine blue did have some noticeable shift...but the other colors performed well.

For me, golden was incredibly obvious. It wasn't a *massive* shift but it is definitely there. The W&N dried samples weren't particularly even either, so it was patchy darker opaque areas and paler thinner areas!

I think all the high quality acrylic paints are fine in regards to color shift or its so minor a problem now that its no more annoying then "sinking in" problems with oil paints. Can you do a prove it with oil primed surfaces vs universal primed surfaces for oil paints?

so... i have a frustration with ULTRAMARINE BLUE. it dries DARK. it's immensely frustrating because it will alter the look of a piece because of this. the only thing i found to do is *cobalt blue* but it's more expensive. : / i have a painting i did just last night, giving UMB one more shot and bam, when it dries - disappointment. (didn't expect to want the blue to stand out on it.) but also i lost vibrant color in pyrrol red which i was not expecting. PLAN B is to actually do a varnish on it, which i usually never bother with. GLOSS, at that! hoping it will revitalize the piece back to how it looked before drying. right now it is a husk of its former glory and is making me v sad.

Regarding color shift, some experienced, professional artists swear by the top-line acrylics from Daler and Schmincke - neither of which appears to be available in the US now.

/I wish you'd done some extra tests that were a bit more fun! You could've had a box of W&N colours, have staff pick 2, you mix and paint with them and wait for them to dry, then you have to recreate that colour in wet paint! That way you're testing the mix-ability as well, but also I feel that one of the main reasons no colour shift would be useful is when you have to mix a lot 😊

Color shift in my acrylic paintings look very noticeable and choppy. I use Golden Open. I can never paint a sky with gradient, let it dry, then go back into it without this ugly dark patch (once it has dried). I always finish off with oils . That’s my only fix, but I may try W&N. I’ve tried painting lighter, spraying w water, etc but it’s always guesswork to match a color, or gradient. It looks accurate going down but dries real dark.. unless someone knows of a fix I’ll always finish with oils..

I’ve found an and golden to have minimal color shift compared to other brands, Matisse especially has a lot of color shift. The paint mixed with mediums like glazing medium totally has a color shift in golden

What I've found is that the key issue is not so much darkening, but that transparent colours appear opaque before drying. You can see that most on the Golden ultramarine sample. Dried, it's transparent but fresh from the tube it's as if it's an opaque pigment. The WN from the tube, however, appears to behave in a more transparent way. Of course, thinning with water will increase the opacity of freshly-laid paint but that can be worked around by using airbrush medium, or something like W&N's glazing medium.

the winsor and newton colors i am specifically trying to find out if there is color shift when dry is their perylene violet and perylene maroon colors. B/c the only swatches i can find on those colors are with their watercolor line, and with the watercolors, there is a massive color shift when dry for those two colors. Even on the winsor and newton website they say that the colors "dry to a dull brownish violet/red". But on another site selling these colors they say that W&N's "revolutionary clear binder" essentially negates this aspect of color shifting. So i would LOVE to hear from anyone who has experience with one or both of these colors in acrylic, what they have learned. If these colors do or do not shift, or even if the shift is less prevalent than the watercolor versions.

My experience is that they darker especially if you’re coming from oil medium as comparison. The problem I had is that none of the colours had covering power as I experienced with my oils especially if I used thin layers and this is without thinning them with water or medium. I had to rework areas several times to get the correct value. The only advantage acrylics have over oils is drying time. I’ll persist with them just to see how much I can work around their limits but honestly they really don’t justify their high cost.

I've used W&N acrylics and a bunch of others, and I find W&N have very little to no colour shift. They are a great paint, with a great consistency.

I love Windsor and Newton acrylic paints. One of the things I get frustrated with is the dries darker issue.... so this is interesting. =) (the shift is more noticeable in my paints... (but I use the WN "Galleria" series). So the ones you tested DO seem to be "good". (to me). I would suggest that you do one more set of tests, "Galleria" versus the Artist ones you did in this video (WN) to see if the difference is more noticeable to you.

Looking at them, I don't really see any color shift with any of the brands-the only thing I see when you compare them is the shine of the wet paint vs. the more dullness of the dry paint. The color itself doesn't look that it has changed.
@burak5601
@burak5601 5 жыл бұрын
That’s why they call it ‘color shift’, not ‘hue change’. All acrylic paints tend to get a little bit opaque and significantly darker when they dried, no matter what producers claim.

the Winsor Newton matters more when comparing the mediums to normal brands mediums. they are more clear than other brands. but the paints themselves, not so much. gel mediums especially.

As others have said, water is probably the culprit, as acrylic binder is an emulsion and emulsions get milky when water is added. You should have included Atelier in your test. They also claim to have minimal color shift.

This would only be valid if you used a drawdown bar which lays down a uniform thickness film. The drawdown bar is a paint industry test tool

I'd be more concerned with value than color. I've noticed Golden Heavy Body dries darker in value, especially if you use a little black in the mix or a dark color like blue. I suppose a color shift could be causing the value change. It's always a challenge to make more paint for something to match in order to get the values right - a little more white, a tad of black, repeat.

Seeing that small bit of darkening does not seem like a lot. However, an entire canvas of dried and shifted color can take the painting from beautiful to rather dull. I would like to see a comparison of an entire same or similar painting wet and dry. Perhaps it could be a simple block "modern" style so that the wet and dry can really be compared.deu to the wet being a quick one. Thanks
@triggerfish999
@triggerfish999 3 жыл бұрын
In your test...you added gloss medium to the control colour strips but not to the wet strip...so you are not comparing like with like. FyI... I switched from student paints to WnN artist acrylics and the difference is dramatic. The student stuff darkens by one increment on the dark/light scale....which is sooo annoying. WnN doesn’t ..at least not noticeably. So then price comes into it. Golden tend to be a lot more expensive than WnN. And a few artists I know about prefer Golden as their acrylic of choice. But from an amateur artist perspective...if you are using student acrylic and getting colour shift, switch to acrylics with a higher pigment load.

Personally, the shift in them was so minute, that I don't think it matters, and I don't think it's so different to warrant the extra cost of the Winsor Newton. Cheers!

Same here. The only thing I have noticed is that the shift is particularly pronounced if you’re using thin layer of paint. I’m on budget and was trying use them as oils but it doesn’t work because almost all of them have weak covering power and a layer just sinks.

Just learn patience and paint with oils. More vibrant color, better texture and no color shifting problems. Thinners are no excuse any more as there are water mixable oil paints.

@JerrysArtarama
@JerrysArtarama Жыл бұрын
@bcarithers22 Most acrylic paints have some small amount of color shifting, it will vary between brands and between individual colors in a brand. Liquitex is a great brand of acrylics that has minimal color shifting in most colors, but we always recommend swatching out your colors before painting in any medium, so you always know for sure how your paints will look!

Not a valid test! You didn’t thin with water, add white or mix colors. I have painted with acrylic paint many years and noticed the good acrylics don’t shift straight from the the tube. But how can you paint with just tube color?

Nice demonstration. Question? Doesn't the surface have an effect on the test results? I don't play with Acrylics, but I have witnessed different results depending on the type of surface and surface preparation, aka primer, with oil pigments. Just another thought here.........I might suggest we see more appearances from the ladies in the next video installment??? LOL
@JerrysArtarama
@JerrysArtarama 5 жыл бұрын
The to your question is, as you could guess, it depends. Most acrylics when painted on like oil cover the surface of the canvas. And since acrylic is painted on acrylic primer it shouldn't have a major impact on the final product. If you thin down your acrylics like watercolor, you can expect them to be more transparent and show more of the color of the surface underneath. Regardless though, the color change would be the same for all brands of paint, all things considered equal, in how they effect the color. And I will be sure to let Jaime, Christina, and Katie know they need more on screen time!

Maybe this test would be more conclusive (and useful ) if an actual colour or hue was mixed from two or more colours, or, if you mixed a line of paint transitioning from dark to light. Most of us don’t often paint right from the tube. Why weren’t titanium or mixing (zinc) whites used? Hues mixed with white are usually where you see the greatest change in a real painting. Also, is even calling it “colour shift” accurate? Aren’t we really talking about “tone” or “value” ie. saturation and brightness/lightness? 👎👎
