A short experimental film made from found footage as I walked Jerusalem's old city. The center video is from 5 June 2024; the other two are the night before.
In the center video/audio, I unwittingly captured the moment as one group of far-right Israelis neared Al-Aqsa Mosque. Within a few minutes of me leaving the area, one group stormed the mosque; others attacked journalists (including one from Ha'aretz). What is not in this video is the significant police/military presence that supported those actions. I left the shadow of myself as it is as awkward and out of place as I felt - especially as I'm aware that my presence there is made easier by my US passport and my government's support for the occupation. My original intent was partly to document the feeling of walking the streets for Palestinian friends who are unable to enter the city, and Lebanese friends who can't enter the country.
Generally I left this with minimal editing, as it captures some of the reactions and feelings around so-called Jerusalem Day. (I think you can't quite hear the sound of one Palestinian woman sighing, but that's the moment most in my memory.)
These experiments book-ended a workshop in sound and image with Jerusalemites, also in the old city so - thanks to all of them, and let's continue experimental recording and soundmaking.
