NOVEMBER 18, 2022: LIVE discussion of ILLUMINATIONS by Alan Moore: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXyniqiDft6YmZI

If you're getting started with Alan Moore and can get your hands on MIRACLE MAN, do so. It's darker and groundbreaking in ways that are surprising and mind blowing. TOP 10 is also really great and even occasionally beautiful. It's a comic about a police precinct with super powers. It sounds silly but it might be one of my favorite books of his.

I like how he's being honest about how he feels about the work.

So many "kind of"s in this video! I'd like to think I've reduced that in more recent videos.

Enjoyed your analysis and took it on board. I am about half way through Jerusalem, and my impression at the moment is that it engages me much more successfully than Against the Day did. The jury is still out on the Ulysses comparison.

Cool, check out my Ulysses playlist if you'd really like to get into that book. I'd probably reword some of this review now.

Thanks for mentioning the subject matter of Promethea. I was looking forward to that because of the art, but I don't want to bother getting too into it if it's about those kinds of subjects.

sad you didn't like it, but i agree with you that it is no intro to his work, its his masterwork though. all the posturing he likes to do about quitting comics doesn't matter anymore. jerusalem was that good to me. he can quit now. about book2: the bloat is an intended effect, but i agree its there. it made me want to know more about Michael in "real life". its still 2016 and too soon to say but i think this will be better with repeat reads. i guess i'll have to let you know.

I might change my opinion at some point down the line, but right now I don't plan to ever reread Jerusalem. Let me know how it holds up the second time - maybe you'll convince me to give it another go!

@@jeremytan739 i haven't reread the entire thing since this comment. but i have gone back to "around the bend" chapter several times and it always impresses. and now we're two months from alan moore's next novel, so i'm looking forward to that!

Thank you for this, Adam. I am tediously enduring Jerusalem ("trapped" seemingly forever as it were in the chapter, "Round the Bend") -- and this is the second time I've stalled-out on this piece of work. I will persevere! I must ask your opinion, however, other that the obvious issue of serial-killing (nothing subtle there, no), why do you feel From Hell is so often overlooked as one of Moore's more salient works? I do not understand that. I feel it's the most complex and interestingly assembled graphic novel I've ever read and I have been around the block (albeit not so much in the past 10 or so years). Would you comment on this?
@AdamSavageland
@AdamSavageland 6 жыл бұрын
I agree that From Hell is great... I'm guessing the *look* of the book puts some people off: Sketchy black and white art and lettering that take a while to get into. It's been at least 15 years since I've read it - would love to give it another read.

Promethea, for me, is the most amazing and beautiful artistic gesture that was ever committed to sequential panels. Just breathtaking...

I liked the fact that the start of the third book acknowledged how hard it was to get through the second book, from the point of view of the builders and the text itself testing the reader. Almost as if he is laughing at the reader for sticking out the section on mansoul. Felt perversely gratifying when it jumped right back to Alma’s art studio. The second book was quite turgid in places, but I think the last section wouldn’t have been as satisfying without it. It’s definitely not a light page turner though and would definitely have benefitted from some editing. I also wonder how much of this was influenced by sitting in an arm chair in an altered state staring at the ceiling. 😂
