In Shostakovich's music you can hear the air raid sirens. Now that I hear them along with the music, this makes somewhat perfect but dreadful harmony.

For me 3rd and 4th quartets are his best chamber work.

They all seem to stand in the shadow of the 8th SQ which is a shame because while the 8th SQ is a great work, it sometimes seems to overshadow the many other great chamber works he has written

A jaunty piece. Its chipper spirit is really pronounced in the first and last movements, perhaps reflecting the end of the long, devastating war. In the final minutes the good cheer gives way to a feeling of urgency before ending with a bit of mystery and those last three fading plucks. On to the future...?
