I'd like to read this. I wish every song would offer their lyrics. I didn't even find this song googling, and she's saying something here. Something about manifestation, maybe, with the sense of separation in existing, maybe finding out you are only what you believe, which is a changing thing. I'm taking some liberties, making as much without seeing the text. I'd really enjoy reading this.

On first listen, I really only caught a few words indicating that it has something to do with religious belief, which makes me both excited and nervous. I'm guessing it will be poetic enough that the dogmatists will not be able to get their teeth into it. I want to read it and see for myself, though.

Sudden Light Lyrics In the fruit she fed me though the chord In the voices coming through the wall In the way I learned to suck and kick In the sudden light and the waterfall In the sour milk that once was sweet With each swallow I could feel love die Every morning for a family prayer For a fairy tale can tell no lie And in the rhythm and in the vibe Before the moment I was born I Came to believe To believe In a fish cross dove and dollar devil rules the water But the water shape shifts to my beliefs Came to believe to believe We got inherent scarcity No antidote for greed But the wheat shape shifts to my beliefs Amen, amen, amen, amen With a tantrum I can get the tit With my fingers I can shoot them down With my beauty I can lead the pack With my prowess I can get the crown In the teeth for my name in bold print In a glossy fashion magazine In the spotlight where I found true love Did I get life if mine went unseen? And in the rhythm and in the vibe Before the moment I was born I Came to believe To believe In the sun star goat and raven Virgin crone and maiden But the maiden shape shifts to my beliefs Came to believe To believe We got a prophet missionary Evil visionary But the vision shape shifts to my beliefs Amen, amen, amen, amen Came to believe to believe You want a brave new world it's a matter of will And the will shape shifts to my beliefs You want a brave new world its a matter of will And the will shape shifts to my beliefs Brave new world, matter of will Brave new world, matter of will

I have bought all of Jessca's albums, she is an incredibly talented singer songwriter, she is, for me, up there with Joni Mitchell (and I am old enough to have bought Joni's first album when it came out) and Kate Bush for sheer quality of performance and songwriting. When Stonechild came out I would listen to it on my drive to work and back (half going and half coming back) and after two or more weeks it was still offering me new surprises. Any way Jessca, should you read these comments, I first heard you singing City Bird on a freebie album called Tom Wait's juke box and I have loved you ever since.

It's very interesting how the video producers/maybe Jesca decided to take a song about chosen belief and set it in an appropriated version of Native American mysticism. Whether or not it was intentional, it left me feeling...dubious? confused? unsure? I don't know. Not sure this was the best direction, but can also see it from an American folk song perspective. A lot of layers to unravel.

A head dress is a head dress - so many cultures have them - why did you go to that one? It's much more about nature than culture
@Alex_Off-Beat2 жыл бұрын
Either way what does it matter? There's a difference between adaptation and appropriation, not every reference to another culture is racist. The whole Gen Z "woke" ideology of "You're not allowed to touch anything from any culture besides your own!" is incredibly stupid and counterproductive...
@paulperkins16152 жыл бұрын
It's very interesting how a viewer of a work of art will project their own stuff onto the work, and then criticize the artist for putting in that stuff that actually is from the viewer.
