THE KINGDOM OF INTIMACY | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (September 8, 2024)
Today is the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time; and the gospel proclaims the miraculous healing of a deaf man who also had a speech impediment.
The healing of the man confirms Jesus’ mission to the Gentiles. But Saint Mark also directs our attention to the means through which the healing comes about.
Jesus puts his finger into the man’s ears and touches his tongue with spittle. Then he looks up to heaven, groans, and says: “Ephphatha!” “Be opened!”
The Lord uses physical means like his spittle and the intimate action of touching and imbues them with his powerful Word. We see here the dynamics of our sacramental life. The Church continues the use of physical matter like water at baptism; holy oil at confirmation, ordinations and anointing of the sick; and bread and wine at the Eucharist, while invoking God’s Word, so that his grace would flow to all, especially those who suffer and are hidden.

The world nowadays is behaving in same manner as the crowd that gathered around Jesus in this episode proclaimed in this gospel.The community that hear mass does not listen to the gospel and as natural consequence the community becomes mute about the gospel

Nowadays people do not hear the word and do not speak of the word louder than words can tell in accordance with the grandiloquent words of one of the greatest stateman who proclaimed thus: "the world will little note what we say here but it can never forget what we did here."
