They were used as agricultural centres - small-scale farms. That is also why they're now used as cemeteries - to regenerate the land.

its very interesting and not the only cemetery where i believe graves are on top of underground structures. The Calton burial grounds are very similar in Edinburgh I made a little vide of the place about 10 months ago.

The thing at the end looks like a water trough rather than a casket or something for a body.

It's a sarcophagus because I've seen them at ancient churches.
