I feel like having a Luke Cage show AND a Jessica Jones show is kind of redundant, they get together eventually, so will they have two shows each featuring one side of a married couple? That would be super weird. Maybe they're going to have a season or two of Jessica Jones and a season or two of Luke Cage and then they will be melded into one show? I don't know, but if they plan on having Luke Cage and Jessica Jones end up like they do in the comics something along those lines will have to happen. Right?

@Ukaran8 жыл бұрын
***** The problem here, is that you are assuming Jessica is a superhero. "Jessica Jones" is not a superhero show, but a detective drama with a few super powered people in it. Jessica being a "weak superheroe character" is the entire point of the character. She tried to be a hero but failed, and now she is just a broken person. Maybe if you try to look at the character and show with a different perspective, you can end up appreciating it more. :)

I'm just peeved that Daredevil made NO cameo in this series. They both live in the same fricken city and they don't come across each other, ONCE. I understand if it was like Flash and Arrow where they both live in separate cities, but even then they have cameos. Jessica Jones and Daredevil both live in Hells Kitchen, and with all the crime that's occurring, you'd think Daredevil would pick up on at least SOME of that. Other than that, it was good.
@RenaldyCalixte9 жыл бұрын
+Wild Koffing Should've at least had a Matt Murdock cameo. Maybe he comes to Jessica's apartment to personally thank her for helping a client he represented that was taken advantage of financially by a cheating husband or something. Or maybe he and Foggy are at a bar and Foggy tries to flirt with Jessica hoping to get with her and uses Matt blindness as a means to gain sympathy and Jessica fires back at Foggy with one of her classic sarcastic zingers. But I don't Daredevil himself should've been in the show, maybe some mention of him would make sense considering he was featured in a newspaper article in the Daredevil finale.
@elijahgoh32659 жыл бұрын
I think they're saving the meet up of the tv series The defenders. However DD's girlfriend Claire temple /night nurse does make a cameo and she offers JJ his help but she refuses (fitting her character). Also Luke cage makes a reference to a guy called Melvin, possibly Melvin potter, who was the guy that makes the DD suit and in the comics becomes DD villian gladiator. Nuke, also featured in the tv show, in the comics is a DD vilian so we might see more of him in DD season 2? But don't worry they'll eventually meet up (along with other characters like Luke cage, iron fist ,etc) and have the awesome tv version of the avengers

So glad you reviewed this, and that you touched on the really significant dramatic subtext this show covered. It was, as you've said, completely unexpected how deep and *real* the story and characters were. As to David Tennant's "Kilgrave"... he was simply stunning. I love how multidimensional he was. It would have been easier to do a one-note, cookie-cutter villain- but he really is NOT that. Tennant (and the script) makes Kilgrave sympathetic- even while you are disgusted and shocked by him, there is the fact of his horrible childhood and the reasons why he is as he is. It reminds me of something Andrew Scott said in "Unlocking Sherlock" regarding Moriarty... "You need to love the villain as much as you need to love the hero, if you're going to have a *great* story." That quote has stuck with me, and I remember it whenever I'm analysing why I really like a particular villain (and it seems to run true- for me at least.)

Love your thoughts on this, all of it rings true. Gotta say, I really dug where they take Wil Simpson in the show (he's apparently a character called Nuke in the comics). He, like most of the characters endures trauma - he's clearly post-war and he was violated by Kilgrave as well, manipulated to kill someone innocent which he doesn't believe in. And his way of processing that trauma is substance abuse. It's a very, very specific substance that he is using to help bring down Kilgrave, but the metaphor is totally valid. Plus, you kind of hate that he descends into it, because his chemistry with Trish and with Jessica is so good, I didn't want to see him go down that dark path.

+mayokun olawale pffft then you can say that about Marvel too, oh X-Men is just in another multiverse and so is Spiderman 3. It's just a bit of a cop out answer that you have to deal with since it exists in the comics but you really know it's a "Way Out" answer.
@mayokunolawale20169 жыл бұрын
errrrrmmmm, no. Thats not a way out. Multiverse has always been a major part of the DC comic universe so it makes sense that that is how they are approaching their shows and films. Plus people like you will never be happy. If DC copied marvel, you would all say that they aren't original and are just copying but now that they are not doing copying, you guys are saying that they should have done what marvel had done
@XCyclonusX9 жыл бұрын
Marvel has been kicking DC's butt in movies but DC has been bitch slapping Marvel in animated and television shows. Until now. With DareDevil and Jessica Jones Marvel has found the winning formula for television drama. While DC's Arrow, Supergirl and Flash are all cookie cutter version of the CW Smallville formula, Marvel is beginning to storm the beaches. The writing, the acting, the cinematography are so superior to what DC is currently producing. DC still rules the animated genre, and we'll soon see if they can catch up to Marvel in films, but they better get busy because Marvel is out for blood.
@LuciferMorningstar____9 жыл бұрын
+XCyclonusX True. But from what I recall, Netflix has a bigger budget than CW i think. DC and co have 23 episode seasons = less time to craft writing, cinematography etc compared to 9 or 10 episodes.
@XCyclonusX9 жыл бұрын
DrewEl2 Oh I agree with you. I'm normally not one to count premium services with over the air broadcasts. For example, its totally unfair to compare Sopranos with 24. 24 has too many restrictions that Soprano's don't. But until they separate premium series from OTA series the comparison has to be made. Still taking away JJ and DD, Marvel's Agents of Shield, while not better than JJ/DD, is better than Arrow/Flash/Supergirl. I'm not sure I agree with you on Netflix giving more money to its series than CW, but Supergirl is on CBS and they have a buttload of money.

The best part about this show is Jessica's flaws, and the fact that the show puts forward the idea that not all heroes have perfect ideals like Cap America or is rich and smart like Iron Man. Heroes are flawed in their own ways...and those flaws are front and centre of this show.

*SPOILERS* * * * * * I had a feeling that they showed that much of Simpson (aka Nuke), because his backstory is linked to how Jessica's got her power, plus it's an origin story for him in a bit cause he's not the full supervillain called Nuke here, but he's getting there. So yeah, it will probably matter in S2 what we learnt about that company that makes his pills, casue Trish started digging.

Daredevil season 1 started slow, but got better halfway through, and got even better in season 2 with the introduction of the excellent Punisher. It's my 4th favourite series after Lucifer, The Flash and Agents of Shield. Iron Fist wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. There wasn't much action like all the Netflix shows, but it was interesting trying to work out the dynamics of who's good and who's bad, and what their motives were. (Currently 10th on my list of favourite superhero shows out of 15) Luke Cage again slow but had an interesting villain in Cottonmouth, then they killed him off. It went downhill from there. Boring and not much action. Shades was boring. Black Mariah was good at playing a bitch, but what threat could she really be to the indestructable Luke Cage when she has no superpowers? And the Diamondback character and story was just ridiculous.....all this because his daddy liked Luke better than him. (Currently 14th on my list of favourite superhero shows out of 15) Jessica Jones the slowest and most boring superhero show of all out of 15+ on tv. Just episode after episode of Jessica moping about not doing very much. Purple man was the shittest villain ever with his crappy mind control power. There were only around 3 interesting scenes throughout the whole series...the bar fight, the Police station, and Kilgrave killing his mum. (Currently 15th on my list of favourite superhero shows out of 15)

possible spoilers While i do think it's a good show and killgrave was a great villain i do think it's inferior to Daredevil. -the action wasn't as nicely done as in DD, im not talking about Jessica's fighting skills im talking about how the fight scènes were really hard to follow sometimes and looked a litle amateuristic. - killgrave is cool but i dont like the fact that he gets captured over and over again to then again escape. -wasn't a fan of simpson and that stupid sister that lives above Jessica. But as i said it's a good show i'd give it a 7 (ssry for grading this Jeremy x() one of my fav scènes is the one Jeremy was talking about. the one with Jessica's old neighbour and another is the one in the police precint where kilgrave controla everyone.

While I completely understand hat you're saying in terms of the action, it's no where near as good as daredevil but I don't think it's fair to compare it to daredevil cause I dint think they were trying to do that. Daredevil focused a lot more on the fights and action aspect while Jessica jones focused more on the characters and their development. Not to mention Jessica is not as trained or as skilled of a fighter as Matt so it would be weird for the action to be as smooth as in daredevil.

2 more complaints: they never explain how Jessica was able to escape kilgraves power, and when kilgrave gets all powerful, he doesn't do anything. This is the guy who broke into a police station, forced everyone to aim their weapon at a fellow officer, and then passed it off as a joke. Will all of that, he could've been so more for the final act. And then, they could've brought Luke cage, and daredevil for this final showdown.

Exactly. No one points this out. How is she immune to him all of a sudden? They just tell us that somehow she is and never bother to explain it.

They explain that it's like a viral infection, and an overly prolonged exposure to it, constantly, in small doses meant that Jessica (with her increased endurance/strength) built up an immunity. Kind of the same concept as a vaccination. And RE: Luke and DD coming for the final act, I wouldn't want that. It's Jessica's story, and the arc ends when she ends it. It's a personal thing, and she needed to handle it herself. Having the others come in would have made it look like she couldn't handle her own shit, and weakened her as a character. I can wait for The Defenders to see them all team up.

In the comics, Jessica Jones explicitly says that Kilgrave never once raped her or even touched her but mostly stuck to psychological torture. Are you saying that that is changed here or are you misunderstanding something? Because let me tell you that backstory REALLY does not need to be more depressing.
@elijahgoh32659 жыл бұрын
It was changed so that killgrave both physically, mentally and emotionaly abused Jessica. They also fleshed out kilgrave way more then in the comics and also changed how he got his powers and why he does all the things he does.
@brianjones84329 жыл бұрын
+Elijah Goh And also basically turned him into yet another petulant child villain with mommy/daddy issues..... Not something Marvel needed more of. The Kilgrave in the comic was far superior. This was a missed opportunity for Marvel in my opinion.
@elijahgoh32659 жыл бұрын
Brian Jones I disagree. Only Loki and Kingpin are the other villains who have so called "parents issues" and i feel that it made Kilgrave more understandable though not excusable. Also instead of making a cliche "parents abused/mistreat son", we later learnt that Kilgrave made the story up to gain sympathy from JJ and his parents were actually trying to save his life and the reason he was upset at them was because they were afraid of him after an incident when he threw a tantrum as a child causing his mother to injure herself and in fear abandoned him, thus he never had a person to teach him moral values and use his powers responsibly. I found the reunion really sweet ("I'm so sorry Mommy" showing he does feel guilt for injuring his mother as a child) and later tragic and horrifying ( the mother sacrificing her life to bring her son to justice by forcing him to display his powers causing her to literally cut her heart out). So for me, I could let this "parents issue" slide because it was executed so well.
@jdperez67549 жыл бұрын
The TV show changed it to that he actually raped her
@brianjones84329 жыл бұрын
Elijah Goh I strongly disagree..... not to mention the lovesick angle.... which by the end was a joke. This was FAR from the Kilgrave in the comic, and a much more wussified version of him. It was a missed opportunity for what could have been Marvel's Dark Knight Joker type of memorable villain, but instead it's just another stereotype that will be forgotten a few months from now. The tone they set with him from the beginning was just all wrong. This wasn't the guy that would walk into a restaurant and tell people to shut up..... This was a guy that would tell them to stop breathing..... He was more menacing, maniacal, and certainly not the love sick little lap dog chasing JJ around because he loved her. Such a missed opportunity.

I understand his gripes with Simpson but thematically, it all makes sense. This whole show was a metaphor for sex, and what that means to us personally. There's a really obvious one with rape and Kilgrave, but then we have Simpson and Trish. Simpson is that classic boyscout that likes things to fit into gender roles, its why he had that whole speech about playing with GI Joes saving Barbies, its why he was constantly trying to take charge of the Kilgrave situation despite being shut down by Trish and Jessica, and its why his power revolved around this hyper-masculine adrenaline booster.

I have no idea what it was that I didn't like about this show. I really really wanted to like this show, trust me. But after 5 or 6 episodes in I just felt like the show lost its entertainment value somehow, maybe it was the forced romances (aside from Jessica Jones and Luke Cages relationship, which wasn't really romantic but felt more real and interesting)? Or maybe it was (how I felt at least) how Killgrave seemed to lose his intimidation factor after he was like: "I want you to be with me willingly" or something along those lines (although I still thought he was a still a fantastic villain and a much better villain than Kingpin). What I do know though is that I didn't like how Jessica's or Killgraves backstories weren't explored more (or at least sooner) and how it just felt "too realistic" for me, and yes I know how stupid that sounds. But don't get me wrong, Daredevil was also really realistic, but I still felt like it had a layer of "comic bookyness" to it which gave it that-
@cinesaur52749 жыл бұрын
-extra bit of "marvel magic" as I like to call it. Although I guess I can't really say much considering I still have 4 episodes left to watch, so maybe it might pick up? I don't know. Either way I may have not liked it because I was expecting more Daredevil esque content, or maybe because I had no idea who Jessica Jones was and I simply wasn't as hyped for it as I was for Daredevil, or didn't already have an instant attachment to her due to my lack of knowledge of her character. But at the end of the day this is simply my opinion and Jessica Jones is only a TV show. And anyone can watch what they want to watch and enjoy it as they please.

I've had that happen where I really wanted to like something but just couldn't. Probably isn't a show you'll want to continue with, honestly. Fortunately, there are others ^^

+zerosysko I finished the show a while ago actually, and I must say episode 10 and onwards impressed me, it was the show I wanted it to be from the get go, although I felt that killing off Kilgrave in such an anticlimactic way was rather idiotic.

Dino Wiz Oh, I'm glad. It did seem it little anti-climactic, but for me it seemed so because it felt like they'd already reached the height of the tension, then dragged it out 2-3 episodes longer which lost some of the momentum. I liked the elements that went into the end - Kilgrave controlling more people (though he'd already done that), putting himself in a vulnerable position due to his deluded obsession and thinking he's already won while it's really a manipulation on Jessica's part for once, the "Smile" line, and putting Trish at risk - but altogether it didn't quite land as well as it could have. Maybe because I already knew she was faking? Nonetheless I still enjoyed it.

+zerosysko I'm honestly surprised Kilgrave didn't use common sense and didn't realize Jessica was faking, but then again I guess you can apply that to his deluded sense of mind at the time. I honestly think he should've turned purple when he took all of those pills as a nice little nod to his comic book counterpart. And he definitely shouldn't have been killed off, oh well. Well at least he had a healing factor in the comics and did survive getting run over so there's still hope for his return.

My favorite scene in the whole show was the namesake scene in "99 Friends". It felt so cathartic I was grinning the entire time.

I like the show. I really do. But nowhere near as much as Daredevil. I know it's not a contest so I'll try not to make it one. I just preferred Devil. Killgrave is an excellent villain but I liked Fisk a lot more because you actually felt for him on multiple occasions. To the point where I wanted him to almost win. XD Also Devil has a much better supporting cast. Cage was my favorite in Jones and he just kinda fucked off for like six episodes. And What the HELL was with Robyn and Reuben?! Holy crap every time they showed up I was just like NOBODY CARES. Kinda felt that way about Jerri Hogarth too. And holy wow Hope was a bitch. Just...yeah I didn't enjoy the side characters as much.

+roarshach13 Really? While side characters like Foggy, Caren, Stick, and James were great characters like Vanessa, The nurse, the russians, the 2 detectives, the japanese dudes, owlsley, and that blonde chick that was fucking foggy were really underdeveloped and uninteresting. While in JJ I thought most of the characters were developed and very interesting. Also I think it's a little unfair to compare Fisk and Killgrave. Because one is a villain and one is on the road to become a villain. Overall I prefer JJ over Daredevil by just a little bit.

TheKevlar4 You're a moron. One of the major complaints about Jessica Jones is the poor writing and poor character development. You're telling me Simpson is a more interesting character? Robyn is a more interesting character? Lesbian lawyers are more interesting characters? Malcolm the stereotypical drug addict is a more interesting character? You're a moron. On top of that the characters weren't developed and were portrayed by weak actors. One is a villain? Fisk is the only villain, moron. Killgrave is a mentally, emotionally, and physically weak man who is lovesick, moron. He has no ambition, no intelligence, and no goals. Saying you like Jessica Jones more lets me know you're a moron.
@roarshach139 жыл бұрын
MetusBatman V7 Hey now, there's no need for that. Having a different opinion does not make someone a moron. While I disagree with Kevlar, I don't think he's a moron for thinking the way he does. If he prefers Jessica then I'm glad! I'm not mad! I'm even a little jealous that someone liked it in a way I couldn't. So please, none of that. Having a preference doesn't make you stupid

TheKevlar4 While I agree with some of that, I feel like Vanessa is what MADE Fisk interesting. The fact that she knew that he was a person who did horrible things and wanted to stay with him anyway was actually really unique to me. Their relationship was one of my favorite things about the show.

The Jessica Jones ending was perfect. The way that it ended symbolizes the emptiness that she felt after she finished it--her mission was done; there is nothing next. All that is left is to think.

Yes, Simpson is a character in the comic book universe. They slightly change the name but he is a soldier who was also part of the super soldier program. He has his own "antagonist" story arc for a reason.

I've watch Jessica Jones, and it's really not my thing... her character is unlikable, drinking alcohol all the time, being sarcastic and trying to act though when she get beat by a girl with a stick (Robyn), It was long, not a lot of thing happen, there was like 5 sex scene in the first 3 episode, in the end she's still the same girl she was in the beginning of the season. But I'll admit I like Killgrave, he was the only character that kept me interested. But I also don't like Game of Thrones, and that show is everywhere, so I guess big dramatic talky show with sex in the mix is just not my thing, but I freaking loved Daredevil

also what is wrong with sex scenes?
@WillieHoule9 жыл бұрын
YT Channel when there is like 3 sex scene in one episode it just feel like a porno (I want to see a Marvel show, not ''Sexy and Drunk vol 7''), and it doesn't really bring anything to the story. For exemple, when that simpson guy is eating Trish pussy, for like 30 sec, Jessica come in to talk with Trish. After they talk for a bit, Simpson come out of the bedroom in his underwear... wouldn't it be more effective if there was no sex scene, like Jessica we would have been surprise to see simpson coming out of Trish bedroom half-naked. so that sex scene wasn't necessary, it just felt force
@YTChannel4209 жыл бұрын
Willie Houle The sex scenes were all around the beginning of the show and now that I have finished the show I barely remember all that, the sex scenes didn't bother me. I thought it kind of showed the relationship between JJ and Luke Cage very well, it's two damaged people that can connect to each other, they both have superpowers they have to hide. Imagine having the ability to have unbreakable skin or super strength like Luke does, having relationships with regular women wouldn't work out too well. As for the Simpson thing, I don't see any problem with it it was just showing what they were doing I don't understand the problem with having sex scenes in a show.. Simpson just coming out in his underwear would make sense if this show was pg 13 or so but it's basically rated R so it makes sense they'd have sex scenes like that through the show. There's only like 1 or 2 sex scenes after the beginning of the show

Hey Jeremy, the character that you're talking about is called Nuke, and yeah, he is a Marvel villain that Daredevil gets to fight in the comicbook Born Again.
