I'm always amazed to see different culture around the world. Some cultures remain the same for centuries. On the other hand some changes over time. Nowadays in south Asia, it's not a big deal if you call your own siblings by their name. Majority of us use the informal words. My younger sister is three years younger than me and uses the informal "you". Same goes with cousins. We even call someone we are close with even if we are not blood related with the informal "you". But it was different in our previous generation. It used to be like older siblings having the same respect as parents. They are still respected but the type has changed. Idk how to explain smh

Honestly I am Bangladeshi and in our country younger siblings have to call older siblings apu(older sister) and vaiya(older brother). It's for showing respect to the older one and my own younger sister has also never called me just by my name even if we are the closest to each other. Its just the basic culture of here. So when I first heard that in America younger siblings call their older siblings just by their names I was beyond surprised 🥴🥴 But now when I think I feel I mean it's not a big thing to call older siblings by only their names but it's just difference of cultures😌😌

@@rev3luv Urm it depends on what culture you’re in and who you’re doing it. It may not be a big deal to call your older sister by her name in the US but it is a big deal in Korea and in some other Asian countries because this behavior get correlated with a show of respect. Of course , seeing as they’re korean Americans (I think?) who grew up in the west, Koreans may be surprised at hearing her call her older sister by her name and may comment on it but won’t really think as much of it. I’m korean American and when my younger brother and I went to Korea, they were surprised that he called me by my name. But that was about it, because they understood that in the culture that we grew up in, it was okay to call older siblings by their names.

it depend on the older person actually 🙂 not on how you were raised or your roots or your culture . If the older person is fine with being called by "their own name" by a younger person and the younger person doesn't mind, it's all okay , y'all are no one to judge. Also i call few of my old cousins by there names and they are fine with it so am I. My mom and dad don't mind me calling them by "there own names" , but i am more comfy with "maa and paa" so i call them maa and paa. And I'm Indian , born and raised in India. Also your takes on what's right and what's wrong and what's appropriate and what's inappropriate and what she should call her sister , keep them to yourself you idiots.You have no right to have a opinion on both of them and how a person should adress their own family

@jwo122 3 жыл бұрын
@@imenkhichi1927 no even amongst friends if there's an age difference you use honorifics but use casual language and not formal. There maybe the rare exceptions but in most part we use honorifics. In the case of these two sisters they adopted a more western way of thinking but even so they are expected to use honorifics in front of other Koreans. When they are by themselves or with other westernized Korean it's whatever feels comfortable but it all depends on the time and place. When Korean friends the same age call for one another they used terms like yah 야 (equivalent to hey) which is considered very rude and inappropriate when used against someone older. So a more appropriate term would would be hyung 형, noona 누나, oppa 오빠, and unni 언니. And calling them by their name is a definite no no. This concept might seem complicated for people unfamiliar with the Korean language and culture but it's really not. For Koreans it's taught from the moment you're able to put together sentences. It's just how it is just like using Mr. or Mrs. in English.

Yaaasss even older cousins! I’ve grown up calling them Afa or Afamoni (for my sisters) and tbh it’s not weird for me because it’s what I grew up with.

we Turks call older brother "abi" and older sister "abla" but sometimes a few years are not be so important. There is 1 and half year between me and my sister and she doesn't call me "abla" 😄

here as well in the Phil, in tagalog we call older bros "kuya" and sisters "ate". But in my natural dialect, we call older dudes "Manong" and girls "Manang".

If I had to respect my shit siblings according to age I'd probably combust. It's a lack of respect to expect extra respect just because you're older.

Exactly, minus the shit part lol the uncalled for over the top respect and the hierarchy thing in some Asian culture is very alarming. I was reading a piece long time ago about how the "Asian" respect and hierarchy thing is the major culprit in bullying penadmic in some Asian countries.

@@z7z766 I mean even if there’s no such hierarchy, there will still be bullying. I grew up in the US, literally you can just be slightly different than what’s normally accepted, and you get the sh*t bullied out of you. I know this because people very close to me have been victims of the worst bullying. My brother in elementary school because he was korean and we went to a white school, and my best friend in middle school, one because he was more feminine than what was accepted for a guy (he later came out as gay) and my other best friend got harshly bullied as well for her natural black features.

@@clorozweepvmundosalazar5153 Ofc you can still get bullied even without a hierarchy system that’s common sense. They’re just talking about the bullying that happens because of Asia’s hierarchy system as an isolated topic.
