I'm always amazed to see different culture around the world. Some cultures remain the same for centuries. On the other hand some changes over time. Nowadays in south Asia, it's not a big deal if you call your own siblings by their name. Majority of us use the informal words. My younger sister is three years younger than me and uses the informal "you". Same goes with cousins. We even call someone we are close with even if we are not blood related with the informal "you". But it was different in our previous generation. It used to be like older siblings having the same respect as parents. They are still respected but the type has changed. Idk how to explain smh

It's for showing respect to the older one and my own younger sister has also never called me just by my name even if we are the closest to each other. Its just the basic culture of here. It may not be a big deal to call your older sister by her name in the US but it is a big deal in Korea and in some other Asian countries because this behavior get correlated with a show of respect. Of course , seeing as they’re korean Americans (I think?) who grew up in the west, Koreans may be surprised at hearing her call her older sister by her name and may comment on it but won’t really think as much of it. @jwo1223 жыл бұрын
@@imenkhichi1927 no even amongst friends if there's an age difference you use honorifics but use casual language and not formal. There maybe the rare exceptions but in most part we use honorifics. In the case of these two sisters they adopted a more western way of thinking but even so they are expected to use honorifics in front of other Koreans. When they are by themselves or with other westernized Korean it's whatever feels comfortable but it all depends on the time and place. When Korean friends the same age call for one another they used terms like yah 야 (equivalent to hey) which is considered very rude and inappropriate when used against someone older. So a more appropriate term would would be hyung 형, noona 누나, oppa 오빠, and unni 언니. And calling them by their name is a definite no no. This concept might seem complicated for people unfamiliar with the Korean language and culture but it's really not. For Koreans it's taught from the moment you're able to put together sentences. It's just how it is just like using Mr. or Mrs. in English.
