They do! I make a lot of quilts and don't use color catchers because I don't want to that to be something I always have on hand. I use towels with my quilts and I think it completely eliminates the need for the color catchers.

@@jessica_dayon- i always use Color Catchers with cold to cool water. I have not thought of using towels. Good tip!

@@jessica_dayon I just use them on dark colors with white. The others I do like you, I’ve got some stand by old sheets and bed pads. ❤️

Such a lovely quilt! I use color catchers in the washer the first time I wash a quilt. I had a quilt with some black fabric that ran and I immediately washed it a second time with the color catchers and most of the bleeding came out.

Just as I thought your scrappy stars quilt couldn't be more perfect, it has been "scrunched and bunched"!😍 I have tried to find some type of equivalent to colour catchers here in Australia - I'm not sure anything like it exists here so thanks for the tip with the towels. May you and your family have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving :)

I never pre wash but I do use the color catcher in the wash. And yes, don’t leave it sit bundled up wet. Good job! Beautiful.

Oh, and I am glad to see there wasn't excessive shrinking of the backing, which you said is a woven. I am a little hesitant to use wovens when I'm doing a scrappy quilt because I don't want uneven shrinkage. Knowing that you don't prewash (neither do I) I will be willing to give it a try now.

I don't wash mine right away, but so far, I've been fortunate to not have colors running. I do use color catchers and they will have some color on them, but the quilts are fine. I don't prewash my fabrics either. I did that once and hated having to iron it all out. That was a long time ago, before I started quilting. I think it was for a dress or something, to preshrink. Thanks for the video! I hope you have a blessed thanksgiving! HUGS!

I never prewash my fabric unless there is a ‘Suspect” in the mix. Batiks, I love but they seem to be the ones to watch closely for. I do add color catchers in the wash and always gift these to any quilt I’m gifting for someone. Thanks Jessica! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family🧡🦃

Thank you for sharing your process for washing your NEW quilts! Questions: What temperature do you wash your quilts? Do you 'hover' for when the wash cycle is complete or set a timer to get quilt out asap from washer?

You're welcome! I was all my laundry (including my quilts) on cool. My machine makes a loud click when it's done so I always hear it and go right over for quilts. Then I either put the quilt right in the dryer or hang it until it can be put in the dryer, or even line dry it if the weather is nice.

Lovely quilt! So if you were to find bleeding in spots when pulled from the washing machine, what do you do?
@jessica_dayonКүн бұрын
I check it when it is wet. If I see bleeding, I would treat the spot where that is. Either with a stain remover, Dawn dish detergent, oxyclean, or something like that and then wash it again. I keep repeating that until it was removed. Then, once it was removed, I'd dry it.

In my vast experience of making one quilt, I also had no issues with the colors running. 😂 Mine was a quilt made with multiple solids. I added two color catchers , but they didn’t pick up anything. I have seen pictures of quilts that had a lot of issues with colors running. I’m wondering if it has to do with fabric quality? I used all Moda fabrics for mine. I’m working on a second quilt now and hopefully I will have the same experience.
@jessica_dayonКүн бұрын
I honestly think it does have to do with quality. When I say that, people don't usually agree though so I'm not sure if they had a different experience or if they just assume that. I have had one Moda one bleed but it was a black wide back and I don't think the wide backs are the same quality as their regular fabric.

No, it didn't. And, actually, I have never had any transfer to any of the towels i put in even when they are white towels.

Happy Thanksgiving!!! My non-scientific observation is that fabrics I’ve starched heavily with Sta-Flo have more of a tendency to run than non-starched fabrics. During washing as the starch dissolves away from the fabric it seems to pull color with it. I’ve also noticed color bleed when I’ve dipped fabrics into a sta-flo/water solution. Sta-Flo has been discontinued but I wonder if other people have observed this with Sta-flo or any other starch.
@jessica_dayonКүн бұрын
Interesting! I don't starch unless I'm using the freezer paper applique method so I didn't know this. Thanks!
