I feel like the movie was a fairly good representation of mag crew life too. I watched it w/ my husband because he has always thought my mag crew stories were so bizzare. I had a hard time re-adjsuting to normal life when I left crew for a bit, it was almost culture shock to go back home. It felt weird to go out to eat or even gas stations without a large group of people all the time.

Many years ago a couple of young women approached me when I was on the front porch of my moms house, we were about the same age, maybe 19 (1989 I think) at the time - they did sell me a couple of magazine subscriptions and at the time I had no idea what the deal was, I always thought it was very odd to have a couple of young women selling magazines door to door. We actually talked for like 45 minutes and they seemed like great people. Like a decade or so later I learned about magazine crews and I was always happy that I was nice to them and bought a couple of subs, to this day I wonder where they are, no idea why.

New subscriber. I’m hooked. I come from a long line of drug addicts, gangsters, lifers, over dosing, suicide, murder, and I’m the only one in my family who watched and paid attention and ran the opposite direction to make sure I would have a good life and I do. I have had other issues such as eating disorders and depression which I got over, but I always love hearing about survivors. I love the stories and seeing them overcome everything. You are amazing. You would be a awesome friend to have. Your girls are lucky to have you as their mother. You have a lot to teach them. Good luck on your journey thru life and happy Mother’s Day.

The reason Star freaked out in the Jones’ home was bc she got jealous of the flirtation between Shia’s character & the Jones’ teenage daughter. Just thought I’d add that detail, bc I think it had less to do w her being new & more to do w her growing crush on him.

I was on mag crew for only 3 months back in September - December 2001... I guess I was in a "bad crew" of about 40-60 (can't remember exactly) because the shit I saw felt lawless, dark and full of drugs and alcohol. Once the main owner bought his "regulators" some guns to take care of a rival crew, I left.

(We once stayed at a DRURY INN with what I believe was a magazine group...While traveling in rural southern Illinois (Marion) when a snowstorm had us stranded for 2 days on our way from MN to our family vacation home in SW Florida..They were very rowdy & dressed very nicely so I was curious how such young kids had so much money! Now I understand better because of you. So Thank You!) FYI..Jess I thought your initial video was perfect. 👍🏻💜

I've only seen mag crews from a "Jones" perspective, and the few times I did, they were scary pushy. I did however have a similar sales encounter with a young woman on a crew selling Kirby Vacuums, and she begged me to just come in and demonstrate. She then said that she was being watched by her boss and 2 other "crew members". She seemed genuinely scared, so I let her know I'm not interested and absolutely could not afford one, but let her in. She was almost in tears and hyperventilating so I asked if she needed help, she said no and immediately started demonstrating. About 5 minutes or so passed and there was a knock at my door, and it was one of the men she had glanced at that was "watching" her. He said he was her supervisor and was just checking in on her. She was very quick to let him know that she was in the carpet cleaning stage and would be done in about 5 more minutes. He said ok and left. She broke down crying and was shaking and I truly believe she was genuinely scared. She never pitched any sale or mentioned pricing or anything. I got her to finally sit down and I asked her if she was OK. She began to tell me about another girl who was kicked out on the side of the road and left without her belongings or any money the night before, and I could just tell that there was more to the story than that. About that time she got a page and said she had to go, the cops were coming in the neighborhood. She grabbed her stuff and literally ran out the door to the car that had been at the end of the street, and after 2 other people got in, they took off. I will never forget the look of terror in her eyes when her "supervisor" was there "checking in on her". I did ask her if she was in danger, but she refused any help. I'm now wondering if she ever got out of whatever situation she was in and is ok.

But I'm just glad that you're telling your story so that other people can open up like even myself because normally I probably never would have even said what I just said! As long as reality is the topic, even though your crew could have been worse, I assume you know that you were breaking all kinds of laws (and you're admitting it in a video). Those weren't independent contractors, they were employees. Not only was your owner avoiding taxes -- he was breaking multiple wage and hour laws. Also, encouraging managers to sleep with new employees? That's another lawsuit waiting to happen (and even though most vulnerable young women don't sue, it's just plain wrong). And so on.

I thought so. I used to work for a magazine customer service call center & we’d get so many calls from people, livid, because they dropped $40-$50-$60 on a sub & we were offering it for $10. I was always SO CONFUSED where they were finding these expensive subs. I quit that job like 7 years ago, but now I know lol. I hope my question didn’t come off rude, I just wanted to be sure ☺️ love you & your videos 💕

A new day and a new video. Great way to start off my day! I shall watch before I have to get going here pretty quick. (Even though I already hit the like button- I'm sure it will be awsome) lol
