My Secret Tips to Pricing Your Photography Like A PRO

The package examples I'm showing are what I actually used for my pricing list (give or take $50-$75) when I was doing professional photography such as senior photos, portraits, family photos, etc. Feel free to take the numbers and fit them to your liking. My packages were simple, effective and my clients were always able to choose something that fit their needs. I was very successful with my business and these packages were part of the success. You just need to find the right balance between the amount of retouched photos and the price point that works for you. The amount of retouched photos is low in each package - that's because I spend so much time working on retouching, color toning, etc. that I also wanted to make sure that I didn't undervalue my individual photo price. Feel free to add or subtract the amount of photos you give out as you see fit. Another tip is you can offer extra retouched photos at $15, $20 extra if your client wants to pay separately for those. I am guessing the retouching you did to those kind of photos didn `t take you more than one hour per photo otherwise these prices for photo-sessions including retouching are really low! When I do my retouching no matter its a product, senior, portraits or fashion it takes more than 2-3 hours per photo and the older the person is or the product (used already or with dust, scratches etc) the longer it takes the high end retouching process! So I guess a second portfolio to include also the hours you spend on that particular work is needed, I am referring to high end retouch and/or photo sessions with lighting set ups for indoor and outdoor which take time; even when u are thinking to just do the setup and the tests, it takes a while to do them because different clients lead to different needs!

when you mention outfit change in the price, does that mean you go shopping with your client for those outfits? or are they ones that the client already owns and wants to wear for that shoot?

Usually the client takes some time to change and change their make up if any so its probably factoring the time the photographer is waiting during that time... or maybe its more work for setting up the camera for the new outfit? I always found that clients take forever changing into the new outfit lol

When I started, which was like over 5 years ago, I did a lot of practice shoots for free with my friends and family just to get more experience. I knew I wasn't ready to charge yet. it took a few years to perfect my craft, editing, camera settings and be proud enough of my work to sell it to someone. I started charging around 2 years ago.

Being a photographer is getting harder and harder. I come from a line of professional photographers. Most people nowadays think their iPhones are comparable to a professional camera so good luck trying to get them to pay your $$$ to take their photos. Stay away from Craigslist, etc. The people on there are looking for cheap. Best way is to send out postcards with your info to expensive neighborhoods. Sell to people with money.

Honestly, iPhone photos even from an iphone11 are shi*. Like I recently did a maternity shoot and I took photos on both an iPhone and my professional camera. Features such as portrait mode on the iPhone emulate that FF look. And again for the average person this is enough. Most people nowadays just want photos to share on Instagram.

As a NYC based Photographer, I, personally would charge no less than $400 for a Basic Package; but I've charged $700 for High-End packages in the past! My last assignment was a Wedding, but the couple didn't want a package at all! So I put 150 of the best photos on a Jump Drive and sold it to them for $700! Needless to say, the couple was very Happy with their Photos!🙏

The photographer needs to take into consideration the market, but doesn't need to price exactly like it. Pricing comes from a doing business stand point. The market is saturated with amateur photographers who don't understand pricing. This contributes to the a race to the bottom and isn't good business practice. A lot of photographers price "affordable" but then that price is way to low. Next you have multiple photographer doing the same. If you look into that market an amateur photographer coming in might think that they need to charge what the other are charging, when in reality its completely wrong. If we take example package 2 it breaks down to something like this: $350 Total. 2 outfits, lets say that it can be shot in 1 hr. 10 edits, we can say that the photographer is a PS wizard and can knock out a great edit in 1 hr or he sucks and he can knock it out in 1hr. That's 10 hrs plus 1 hr for the shoot ( not counting commute) for a total of 11 hrs. That comes out to $31.80 per hour. IF someone worked 40 hrs a week at $31.80 that's $1,272 multiplied by 4 weeks is ~$5,000. For the year that is ~$60,000. I don't think anyone charging that price is working 40hrs straight a week shooting/editing. Now factor in your Marketing, Expenses, Rent, Car, Gas, Gear Maintenance and TAXES, your prob making closer to 35k IF you are shooting 40hrs a week non stop. Pricing isn't just about VALUE its also about feeding yourself and being able to live comfortably. With the High End Package your actually doing more work and basically making the same $$$. Note: I do understand these are just "examples" on how to price like a Pro and that it can be adjusted, just breaking down the math so the passionate photographers out their don't go bust an hungry.

Photobiz his a host site for your website they specialize in photographers websites. You can have your pro design your site straight through their platforms. If she knows her stuff it will be a breeze. They charge $29 a month to host and you can also have your client galleries there as well with private passwords. I was using a separate host for that but ended up saving $30 a month because I was able to combine everything. Trust me it’s worth taking a look hon. I do t work for them I am what you would call a VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER! I hate squarespace and I don’t know why so many influencers try to say they are so great. The templates are fine but the customer service is nerve wrecking. 😖

@@james-r yes indeed in the beginning it might look awkward for you but a professional usually does this; Can be just an agreement not a real contract but where u have to stipulate your conditions and also limitations if they are; also can be an email with their signature as a confirmation (signature just their name and a tel. no. at least); How u send them an offer than? use an official email address for ur work, put everything down, send the email to them and do not forget to ask for a confirmation from their part, otherwise u cannot start the photosession.

My specification is working with modeling agencies and sometimes I receive orders from small businesses and ordinary people. For the second group of clients I charge a fixed amount of money for my work and particular number of retouches but I don't pick up photos myself. I send them preview of all pictures that came out well and that's when I can earn more. People are used to choose way more pictures than stated in a package so I charge them for extra retouching.

10 retouched photos for 350$? That means 35$ per image. So now, what goes into that one image? 1 hour of shooting Calculate half 0,5-1 hour of retouching per photo (5-10 hours of retouching). So basically your hourly rate trickles down to 350$/11=31,8$. That does not include travel time, preparation time, camera gear, insurance and taxes, culling images, hard drives, back-ups, software. Such lowball prices ruin the photography industry. Calculate all of that into the equation and you probably won't gain much. Because you still have life expenses such as rent, food, transport costs, clothing etc. You can't be serious. A daily rate should not be below 1000$. Talk to agencies and specialists, they'll confirm that!

Did you even watch the video? I say MULTIPLE times that these are example numbers and you can add whatever you like to fit your needs as a photographer. I give example estimates so you can get an idea of how I sort my packages. At the end of the day you choose the prices that work for you.

Yes, Jessica, I watched it and I heard and listened to you. Still your title claims to explain PRO rates which those are not. Then call it "how I price my images" or whatever. If you don't talk about a pro market and pro customers and then keep saying "change to what fits you" while talking about normal people getting their photos taken instead, you mislead many real PRO photographers, devaluate their work compared to other photographers and compared to potential clients watching your video. Because what would justify then to charge 1200 a day if a pro charges 300€ already and clients heard that pros charge 300€. I just think the title is wrong, misleading and not well thought through. The rest is okay. Those are good rates for shooting ordinary people. But those are not pro rates. Cheers. -- Just to quickly pull up some numbers here: - Camera: 1200€ - Back-up camera: 1200€ - 4 lenses: 5000€ - SD cards: 300€ - Batteries: 100€ - Tripod: 500€-1000€ - Tripod head: 120€ - Lighting gear: 500€ - Camranger: 500€ - Fast computer: 2200€ - iPad: 850€ - Color calibrated monitor: 500€-1000€ - Website: 150€ / year - Photoshop: 120€ / year - Gear insurance: 70€ / month - Health insurance: 200€/ month = 13.900€ And those are just a few of all the expenses a photographer has, to be able to work professionally. Education time (12 years) and costs as well as experience are not even taken into account, neither are life expenses such as rent, food, transport, clothing and leisure, or time for client acquisition, writing offers and e-mails. So if I shot for 300€, taking me 2 days there's not much left to make any living from that money, considering all the business costs, time to build up a client base and for marketing. If you order a plumber, you pay him travel time, time on location and gas. You pay 80-100€ per hour. Calculate the time above for one shoot with that rate and you end up somewhere around 800€-1000€ a day. And well, this so claimed "PRO pricing tip" brings you to 300€ for 2 days.

Isolino Silva I’ve seen another video of Jessica’s, where she said she did not release photos to clients that aren’t retouched. It’s a representation of your work. Even though your client may want it, people will see it and will assume it’s the finished product and the quality of work they can expect from you.

I'm an actor and there's a photographer I go to for headshots. He'll take maybe 200 photos or so with a few different outfits, and then he'll sort through and delete the bad ones (blinking etc) and send me all the shots. In his package, I'll also get 2 retouched photos included. I can get more retouched at an extra cost if I want. But for my needs it's perfect, and I love that I get a copy of all the raw unedited photos. Maybe someone's doing an engagement or pregnancy shoot, and they want an album of photos, but they just want a few blown up onto a poster, or the cover of a photo album. They don't need every pic retouched. From a customer perspective, I would prefer to get all the photos, and the few retouched ones. The average person can barely tell the difference anyways, unless it's super stylized/color edited.

I work with a base package and then offer add ons so clients can choose how much they want to spend. Base is around €100 and every add on is around €20/€30 like extra backdrops, extra outfits, extra photos, extra shooting time etc! Works like a charm.

I know you're asking Jessica, but personally I only include ones I'd want to retouch in the proofs they receive--so they wouldn't have the option. If they saw it while we were shooting and remember it and want it (fortunately has never happened), I'd say it was blurry. If they still want it I'd just give them what they want so long as they understand what they're paying for. I give them final pick on what is being retouched.

I think this video went over what services and digitals are included in each package, but not the session time expected. Do you set up that expectation? For example, the basic package is up to 15 minutes with the client (like a mini), the ideal package is 30-60 mins, and the high-end package is 90-120 minutes (being that it could be 2 locations, and a few outfit changes). Where I live, 2 locations could be a 30 minute drive apart, depending on traffic. Do you select the locations or do you allow the client to? If it's a pretty long distance, do you then introduce a travel & mileage fee?

If it's just a small boutique, I make a selection with them, which is usually one picture of each outfit for their website or newsletter and do a quick edit myself without any extra charge. Bigger clients usually hire a professional retoucher. If they don't, I do charge extra by the hour. Since I work in the fashion industry, the number of pictures the client needs varies each time depending on how many outfits we're shooting. So it doesn't really make sense for me to include a set number of edits in my rates.

Your half day shouldn’t be 50% the cost, you want them to hire you for a full day so price your half day around 1200 so they see a better value in a full day :)

What I struggle with is if these price points change due to the product being basically digital. I feel like I have to add prints to these packages, but I don't necessarily know if I should, and if I do, how that could affect my prices. I am really starting to see the value of my work, but still the struggle is real when trying to really feel confident that how I price my packages makes sense. And what to include in those packages. Do you have any advice for work contracts and billing? Do you factor in travel time in additional costs? (For instance different locations in your package being quite far from each other, or far from where you are). It's a great base of where/how to consider what to charge, but it'd like to hear your experience more in detail with clients and getting paid. I have really struggled with this topic and am so happy you did a video on it. My problem here where I live is that there are a TON of ‘photographers’ taking average photos and applying a generic or none at all preset and then giving all the photos to their client. Eyes closed photos and all! They charge like $200 and just let the client have them and that way they don’t have to edit anything. It’s so frustrating!

I set my packages for number of people in a portrait session. So for me it’s about $150 for 1-2 people, a one hour session, and 10 final edits. Then they can add on more like $50 for going over an hour and $5 per pic over the first 10. Then my next package is for +3. Then I have a wedding package. I list on each package like ‘this would be good for...’ I’m in Seattle btw.

RIGHT NOW I'm simply working on building my portfolio, getting marketing material, and building my knowledge, I'm not charging anyone or making any money. I've got my Facebook Page up and running (I'm scouting for 5 people to give free sessions to FOR NOW) and then continue taking photos of My family for marketing material. I'm working on my website, watching business videos, buying photography equipment (setting up a Women Cave lol) Where do I go from here? What's steps do I need to take? I'm still going to do free photoshoots for the next 2 months and I'm also wanting to get hands on experience from other amazing photographers (attending workshops and offering becoming a 2nd shooter in photoshoots for the experience, I've been working with other photographers for about a year exchanging tips and tricks for posing etc...) but I'm paving the way for me to actually make money from this hobby of mine (I'm in no rush and doing things safely before launching) Does getting my EIN means I registered my business? I don't expect to make a lot money so I don't have a number of how much I'll be making a year (I'm from a really small town) Any advise?

A bit old, but, do you have to deal sometimes with people telling you "hey i saw your first package of e.g. $150 and 4 photos, but I only need 1 to be honest, could I have it for $37 as I don't need the rest?" kind of stuff? Do you tell them that you are sorry but you only do that minimun because of the effort to do a shoot at all. Or do you negotiate it? And what happens if someone wants, lets say the middle package of 10 photos for $350 but they are willing to pay an extra eleventh photo? how do you do your math to cost additional photos? So many questions for pricing when starting x.x

That's a marketing technique called "price anchoring". The higher prices make people think the inexpensive package is inferior (they unconsciously assume "there's something wrong with it"), and the expensive package makes the middle price look reasonable. The high price and the low price are brackets that funnel people to the middle price.

This is super helpful thank you ! I live in a big city in Europe with a LOT of competition and other photographers would usually charge around 100$ for 4 outfits, 30 photos... And that's on the more expensive side ! Because the main clientele is bloggers and celebs driving prices down. Do you have tips on diversifying what you shoot/ getting people to find you ? Thanks !

Is this means that the customers will change their clothes in the middle of the shoot or they will have another day with different outfits?? My question is… when do you collect payment? What if they choose the intermediate package then they look at their proofs and want to upgrade for the pro package? Would it be 3 payments from the client? 1. Initial payment (deposit) 2. Remaining balance day before the shoot 3. Additional photos if they want them Is anyone else doing it like this? I’ve done this in the past but hate that for my clients. I feel it’s inconvenient for them to pay 3 times
