As a Korean and also an English learner, after I watched this video, I realized that English is just a tool.. because I think I cannot speak this much logically and structurally like you even in Korean. Great video and I also commend the production team on this series. I wanted also to hear more about how are immigrants (like Ali) and North Korea defectors (like the young lady) treated in Korean society. As you state, gender could take a whole video on its own. But I think it is very cool the interest it brings from other countries to understand Korean society better. I think you have a naïve view of loan sharks and gambling. Those exists on many other cultures and they prey on the weak and addictive nature of some people. They are always illegal, yet they DO happen. Even if the gambling is run by the government you can't tell me you expect all your government to be clean/legal. All governments have corruption. The fact that you have a center to help those with gambling issues does not mean they all get treatment. And I could bet at the betting place they are individuals willing to loan money "under the table"... :-) Great video!

Wonderful review Jessica! What makes the Squid Game stand out compared to all other death games is how it presented the tragedy of the human condition in a multiple ways (thru each character archetype) and at the same time expose real societal issues within each game. The stark contrast of the beautiful facade versus the life/death desperation of the players is what made this series so captivating to the audience. And I have to praise the brilliant raw-ness of the cinematography. The perfect silence at each crucial moment is what kept us holding our breath like we're in the actual game. Furthermore, all the characters were given depth and reason behind their decisions that's why none of them looked stupid or greedy when they willfully returned to the game. It's a really thought-provoking idea that resonates to every one of us, and that's why this series is soooo good.

Jessica, just because you haven't seen people being threatened violently by loan sharks, does not mean this does not happen. This happens all over the world. If you cannot convince a financial institution to lend you money and you borrow from shady individuals, they will threaten you with violence if you miss payments. It happens in Korea and everywhere. In fact, AKMU made an entire song about this - "Dinosaur." Thanks for clearing my confusion on the way it was portrayed. It was the first time I ever watched a kdrama like that. It infuriated me right from the first episode when they were gonna burn the bodies of those who failed. I think they should've been warned that they would die, but I did not see that. I thought when they used their body as collateral they meant not to the point where they would totally die. Bec the slap game with Gong Yoo is definitely weird. (Oh, you forgot about that game) Now I can continue it, knowing partly that it's just a drama.

Thanks for sharing this! I want to say something about a point you raised, though. While the players weren't exactly forced to join the game, I also wouldn't say that they were given much choice. All the players had huge debts which are almost impossible to pay. This means the rich people behind it specifically targetted them and put them in that situation in order to exploit that weakness. In situations like this, the consent given by the players would be regarded as irrelevant (as in the case with human trafficking victims). Further, before the first game started, nobody knew that they were going to be killed since the term "eliminated" was not defined, so they were also not given an actual informed consent.

I think this series find worldwide popularity not only cause it is well made but it has elements most people can relate to. Most countries have their own version of red light green light. Most of us played tug of war on sport days at school. I also had dalgona type candy sold at school. Many countries people have no health insurance especially when they are old & need it most. In my country we have lots of loan sharks that prey on people & they end up owing dangerous people alot of money. They can also relate to fathers abandoning their kids & mom struggling to raise them.

I totally agree with everything you said especially the social aspect that Squid Game touched on. I love this series a lot. It definitely is one of the best thought-provoking stories ever told. The Korean games are not far from the traditional games I played in my country that’s why I really relate. I think about the reason why the Gi-Hun’s mom left the hospital eventhough can be treated there (and yes the Korean Government can take care of her medical expenses), was she was worried about the rent of her house and their daily expenses. When Gi-Hun told her she can pay that off with her money saved, his mom replied, “what money? You took them, remember?”

Well, the bridge game isn't a kid game and the 1st game exists worldwide (In France's French, we call it "un, deux, trois, soleil" = "one, two, three, Sun" which is what you say when you face the wall) as well as marbles and tug of war. Only the 2nd game and the last one seem typically korean. Although, the squid game looks like something people would play around the world with variations in the rules.

They may have also added the insurance problem to be more relatable to those from other countries. When I lived in the US I believe currently everyone has insurance? But there are a lot of bad or very expensive insurances and you still end up paying an arm and a leg. Hospitals in the US will try to charge you just for asking for an extra blanket and you can argue the price down but it is much more difficult without insurance to do so.

Korean series are really superb!!! Like the marketing strategy is out of this world. It's kind of similar with "Alice in Borderline" (correct me if I'm wrong) but it does not have the talk of the town vibe, it's just okay. Season 2 pleeeeease for squid game.

The comparison of "Squid Game" with "As the Gods Will" is rooted in having the same genre of death games and the "Red light, Green light" game being almost identical to the Daruma Game. The comparison is reasonable of course but it's not the closest movie to compared Squid Game to. The concept of gamblers being "manipulated" into playing a dangerous game with promises of big wins is from another Japanese work - Kaiji. Game #5 is almost identical to the one from Kaiji. Squid Game did create a good story for each character. Drawn out the plot to add drama. Had great set pieces. Good acting performances. That's the part that Squid game really excelled on. With almost everyone not being familiar with Kaiji, the concept of Squid Game feels fresh to most. Thus, the show feels current despite the backbone concept made since 1996 in Kaiji manga.

I think the argument of people, who are saying it's so similar to As Gods Will though, is more focused on the cinematography of the two movies rather than the scriptwriting. I haven't seen any website accusing Squid Game of having a similar story arch to As Gods Will. BUT I've seen articles talking about uncanny resemblances when it comes to cinematography. In movies and shows, copying doesn't just start and end in the writing, it can span out to the different elements of cinema.
