The "no other pet interactions" one is a good point - I've had to move some animals around/put pieces of cardboard between some enclosures because just being neighbors has stressed out a couple geckos. Although I suppose having a big angry leachie as a neighbor would scare just about anyone 😅

Question, would it be okay for them to watch other small animals? I have a fish tank nearby and I catch my Leo watching the betta often.. is this stressful to the gecko?

I completely agree!! so many other people kiss reptiles and let other pets interact! It’s so unsanitary and also irresponsible

I’m so glad you showed clips of cats with geckos in the tanks! I had a problem with my cats always jumping in my geckos tank, she didn’t see to mind and just ignored them but it’s a safety thing! Found these plastic spikes sheets called scat mats on Amazon I was able to cut holes out for her lights and zip tie them down and they havnt jumped on the tank since!

Leo's can also be quite the aggressors in interactions. I was cleaning tanks a few weeks ago and couldn't reach a tub so I put my Leo in the bottom of my day gecko enclosure and thought it would be OK for 5 minutes or so right, arboreal and terrestrial an all that. Nope, not 30 seconds later, my Leo had scaled the background and was trying to attack my day gecko who was not happy about the intruder. Never again.

The biggest problem that comes with people forcing their prey & predator pets interact is that they personify/anthropomorphize them to the point that they *are seen as having human intelligence and emotion.* That, to me, is one of the biggest mistakes any keeper can make with any pet, but especially reptiles. It leads to misreading body language and behaviors, often causing them to become really stressed out. I've seen so many videos of people saying things like "Awww! She's wagging her tail, she's so happy!" No Linda, your child's leopard gecko is not happy to see your cat. Your cat wants nothing more than to eat and dismember it and the gecko knows that. Edit: Reptiles are also not social basically at all! Their brains aren't built to even understand interactions like that.

My leo wears lil paper sombreros pretty regularly. Every evening he is ley out to roam my desk and sometimes while am playing games he likes just watching me play( his tank is on the desk so I just open the door. He can and will go back inside if he wants to). I often make lil paper sombrero hats and put it on his head while watching. They fall off when he starts moving. Also the only encouraging in biting I have ever done is with my last gecko when giving meds. Very effective in making them open their mouths to sneak in meds. With the current one it appears giving him a much needed bath is enough encourageme( he often poops and walks over the poop immediately after dragging his tail in the poop.) We have a montly bath. He doesn't like it. I do not care for his dislike.

Small correction: there can be benefits to an animal having access to something they would have never evolved with and interacted with in the wild. Much of the feeders and substrates fot various reptiles and such aren't exactly habitat accurate. HOWEVER, this doesnt mean that these animals will benefit from exposure to other species in the context of introducing two pets together. Care and research should always be done rather than assuming. A lot of what we take for granted in the modern hobby was learned, built upon, and honed over time. An example: in captivity cresties can be bigger and stronger if their diet includes both fruit and insects year round, even though in the wild the percentage of fruit to insect wildly fluctuates by season.

I have some extra frozen pinkie mice from a snake I was caring for for a short while and now have a bunch of extra and I thought it would be a good opportunity to see if my leo Sunny would like one. (This was after watching Rebecca’s video and I only plan to give them VERY once in a while, like maybe twice a year.) Sunny loved it and it was interesting seeing her exhibit some new feeding behaviors, but wow was it gross to watch her eat it! 🤢 She’s been doing just fine and no changes in health, I would def say it’s a nice once in a while treat to change up the meals!

excellent video. unfortunately, mine hates to be touched and never leaves his cage, unless it's time to clean it. he did grab my finger once as he thought I was food. he quickly released it and ran it the corner. I agree with everything you said. Keep them coming. I still think he's the dumbest one as the crickets sit right in his field of view and he just ignores them until he sees one in the distance.

I think feeding frozen thawed pinkies or in the case of my leopard gecko (a large male supergiant) fuzzies, is perfectly fine if you do it once or twice a year. In the wild they are opportunistic so if they get the chance they will eat it. Also, it is good for them to occasionally work their jaw muscles because in the wild they will often eat smaller vertebrates such as lizards with bones and stuff. So yeah. but thats just my opinion. Edit: I also think that you could safely do interspecies interaction as long as the is a barrier or one is physically incapable of harming the other. For instance my dogs love to watch my gecko through the glass and he isn’t stressed when they do this, he actually wants to come out so he can meet them and is very interested. Of course I don’t let him out though. I have introduced him to my baby red foot tortoise with a few visual barriers if they need. Of course all these interactions are done with supervision.

@phelan_pt Жыл бұрын
They'll associate you with food appearing, and stop being as scared of you, if you're doing it right. It's extremely unlikely that they understand the "owner-pet" relationship, not even a friend relationship. They're opportunistic animals, and don't socialise like that in the wild.

The fact that a lot of these things need saying is… disturbing, to say the least. I’m a very recent first time leopard gecko owner and none of these things even vaguely occurred to me. I’ve done a lot of research and know someone that has a lot of experience so feel relatively comfortable. Just one question: mine are a female sibling egg pair that seem to get on very well and they’re only a few months old. They’re currently being co-habited and I’m obviously trying to make sure they’re both getting enough food although I rarely see them eating (food disappears when I’m not looking). Do you have any tips or advice for me in this situation / do you think personally it’s ok to do-hab them or would it be better to buy a separate enclosure? From my research it seems ok but I just really want what’s best for them. Thanks :)
