This song is Jessie's masterpiece. I love her stuff, I follow her on Instagram where she asks for song/poem prompts and then posts like 20 song snippets/poems a day -- it's truly breathtaking how prolific she is. I've read/listened to all of them, she has this super interesting authorial voice, where she will stay strong and proud on any, any emotion that she's feeling, and she will defend it. All that to say, this song is her best, bar none. It's so incredibly vulnerable, an expression of "I can fix you, you just gotta love me", god that's heart-wrenching, especially since you know how those things turn out. And Jessie likely knew it too, but yet she stands proud on her emotion amd defends it. To me, this song defines her as an artist, and exemplifies what makes her so special. If you're starting with Jessie Reyez, start here

Jessie Reyez reminds me of so many artists I have loved over my lifetime, it’s strange. She has elements of so many genres and vocal styles. She raps well, sings well, makes unusual vocalizations, lullabies, screams to unapologetic, blunt lyrics. One of the best newer artists in my opinion. Personally I haven’t found this kind of connection and versatility since I first started listening to Azealia Banks and Regina Spektor ten years ago or so. (Not the same genre but some surprising overlaps here and there in style.).

Being in love and loving someone are two completely different things. Sometimes one or both don’t know the difference. In my case it was my immature ass that was a late bloomer In understanding the delicate and serious situation I was In. So glad this perfect woman loved me enough to give me a chance to if she was mentally capable of letting herself fall in love e with me again.. she gave me 3 chances and that last time I cracked the code us! I just had to catch up. In most cases it’s the females who give more love than their spouse even thinks about giving. I say “think” because some cases the guy is green and Immature and don’t know where to start in becoming the man his wife sees in him. This tends to make the immature guy lash out and start telling the female she asks for too much. I’m just glad my wife was raised in maine. She isn’t in to material things and as long as she feels loved and protected we could live in a tent in the woods. She’s strong enough to handle her own and can be very dominant at times which sometimes I can relax and let her know her that energy out, I think it’s due to her bisexuality lol but as of last year I put it on the table that she can have a girlfriend or even wife if it comes to that. The 21 year old me she met would probably fly off his rocker if i even thought she had a dream about being with a woman. I was very lame and judgmental and society we were raised in made me hate how free she was, she dressed sexy flirted with females and it tormented me until I realized I lived her more than I cared about ANYthings else…. Like the love that’s possible when two people accept each other for who they are whole at the same time being everything each other wants can be amazing

Opening hit deep. "Broken home baby, I can never blame ya' No one ever taught you how to love right No one ever taught you how to stand by when it's uphill And more times, this love is just uphill." The toxic dynamic between my parents was my idea of Love, it was all I've ever known. I subconsciously carried that into my relationship, I tried and tried to the very end, but I ended up losing my sweet sweet boy. I lost the most important person in my life all because I never learned how to love in a healthy way. It's crucial that we learn and heal from our trauma, or we'll always be self-sabotaging our happiness. I miss him like crazy everyday, but I know he won't come back. Please don't make the same mistake I did, if someone is trying to help heal your toxic tendencies, appreciate them everyday and love them like you're going to lose them.

I'm a broken home baby and I fell in love with Jessie's heart after hearing this song❤ Especially because even though I'm the broken home baby, I find myself in relationships where I stay to try to save my lover from himself. This song hits hardddddd. I was never hugged or told I'm loved by either of my parents (my dad even attempted to kill my mother and fled the country after 15 years of abusing us) I tend to look for others who don't think that it's weird I was never taught love. I end up with other broken home babies smh..... but this song has pushed me to know my worth and not settle for someone more broken than i am just to not be embarrassed by my upbringing. I need a man who has a heart like Jessie Reyez, and I hope God blesses me with one. Amen.
