Hey Jess! I found out when I took a theatre class in college that the "break a leg" comment comes from the idea that if a performance was good enough they would encore so much that the legs that hold the show curtain would break from being opened and closed so many times! I thought it was for luck hoping the lead would actually break their leg so the understudy could take over. True story I actually did have to take over once for a dancer that did break her leg. Ended up with twice the choreography and a few extra dance numbers. That year I had 8 or 10, I forget. On top of lining up kids for their dances in the wings.

The factual origin of “break a leg” is specifically unknown, though there are many historical events that have led to its commonality. Different cultures have utilized the phrase differently, depending on events. In 1939, the phrase was quoted by understudies, in hopes of obtaining the lead role they’ve prepared for. Around similar times it’s also attributed to an old Yiddish phrase. There’s also performer David Garrick, whom broke his leg on stage in the 18th century but was so involved in his role he didn’t even notice. There are vaudeville connections, at a time where theatres would overbook performers, and the phrase would be used as a “good luck” in getting paid from one performer to another. There are many more stories of the phrases usage, but I personally find it fascinating that a phrase can cross culture and time, but have differentiating, yet aligned reason and purpose. Art and dance are beautifully connected.
