@@RichardNicolasJones the flu killed 97% of the Indigenous population shortly after the Spanish landfall. countless tribes of peoples and their entire cultures were snuffed out by disease within one generation. the ships brought so much more than just smallpox- the Native Americans had a massive, complex society with access to metallurgy, medicine, art, large-scale construction, industrial farming, and sophisticated trade lines stretching from the ancient Central American homeland of the Aztecs all the way up to the Inuit of Alaska. Then numerous sicknesses never before witnessed by the Indigenous Peoples wiped them out overnight, and their glorious and rich cultural history- along with any lessons we could have learned from them- has been all but extinguished, completely lost to humanity forever. Basically- they were doing just fine until colonizers and their pathogens showed up
