This fine old hymn was written by Cecil Alexander in 1852. It is is particularly suitable for themes around Jesus calling his disciples, and our own call to salvation. I set the text to the tune STUTTGART, recording it in Epiphany 2024.
Mrs Alexander was a prolific hymnwriter and poet, and began publishing her work in her 20s. Many of her hymns are still sung today-There is a Green Hill Far Away, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and Once in Royal David's City among them. Her husband, also a poet, became the Archbishop of Armagh, and Primate of All Ireland. Two of their children were also poets.
