what i truly love about this scene is that gives Jesus life. The man was historically real and went through this Hell and this scene humanizes Jesus, he was about to suffer incredibly and he didnt know why he had to and had true genuine fear and doubt like any human would. Ted absolutely killed with the vocals and its shocking the man could sing like that.

Renan Carreira, no. Ian Gillian is another rock star and AMAZING at this song but the style of the ad libbing part is quite different. This is Ted Neeley from the original Broadway cast. Ted Neeley wasn’t even the principle for Jesus in that cast, either. The principle was Jeff Fenholt. I believe the story behind the casting of Ted Neeley for the film production is because Ian Gillian, frontman for Deep Purple was on tour and wanted his band to be paid for missed concerts. Well, since that price was way too high, Ted Neeley was cast and now most internationally (at least outside of England and maybe most of Europe) recognize him as THE Jesus for this role. Ted Neeley has performed Jesus in production for DECADES well into his 70’s because of his notoriety in it.

The video with the bad editing where Ian Gillan’s voice and the mouth in the video not being aligned? THAT is the real Ian Gillian. Perfectly straight straight. The curly haired guy in the other video is the STAND-IN from that video recording. The sound tracks are the same, though, and it is Ian Gillan’s voice you are hearing. Ian Gillian starred in the West End (London) production of JCS.

That's the thing about this musical that sets it apart. Everything about the divine is up in the air, apart from this montage, the ending scene, and "Superstar", but the former two's presentations are unique to this movie. It focuses on the human and historical context. Most of all, it doesn't shy away from the idea that Jesus may have been a crazy person, and that's why people turned on him. Coz this crazy man, or rather, his movement, would get them killed by the Romans like they did in 40 years. Even if you are a believer, it's really an angle one shouldn't ignore about the time and place

I've watched this movie dozens of times, and this scene hundreds. But something occurred to me yesterday that hadn't struck me before. It shows that God answers prayer. Jesus asks if what he says will matter more and to be shown he will not die in vain. GOD ANSWERS HIS PRAYER. He shows him art that will be painted 13 centuries later. Yes, it will matter more, and God shows him it will in a way perfectly suited to the pace of the film and integrated with the score. The film changes at that point. After the art sequence, Jesus isn't defiant and questioning. He is humble in addressing God, and his tone and expressions indicate he is asking God to understand why he had had his doubts. His tone the second time he says "Now I'm sad and tired" is very different than it is the first time he says it. Except for that one powerful line, "What you started; I didn't start it" from this point on, he faces what he has to face with acceptance and dignity. All he asks of God is "Take me now before I change my mind." This shows he had free will and knew that, because he was the Son of Man as well as the Son of God, he was subject to human frailties such as fear and doubt. And again GOD ANSWERS HIS PRAYER. The very next scene is Judas's kiss and Jesus's arrest. I had never noticed the message that God answers prayer in this short segment of the film before. One of the wonderful aspects of art is that we can interact with it hundreds of time and experience something new with each interaction.

Norman Jewison is a genius. If you like this film, you should check out his other movie musical Fiddler on the Roof. He also made a number of excellent dramas including The Thomas Crown Affair, Agnes of God, Moonstruck, and The Hurricane. The attention to those subtle details in the drama of the song is what makes his films so unforgettable. Another film to check out, by the inimitable Alan Parker, is Evita. He has that same sense of subtlety that gives you a new perspective with every viewing. Excellence of this magnitude always brings me to tears.

I was about 20 when I first saw this scene decades ago and it made me cry. I sat there with my sisters and we were all speechless. The photos are haunting and the whole scene indeed humanizes Jesus. He was afraid, just like we would be. I love the musical- we have the original album that my brother bought in the early 70’s as well as the one from the movie. I have attended 2 theatrical productions and enjoyed the live one on tv featuring John Legend. Awesome music, direction and singing each time.

If I may I'm a Christian a missionary, though the theological is not exactly right. But the excellence of the portrayal of Jesus in pain and in great distress is accurate. Jesus was 100% man and 100% God in the flesh. He came to suffer for not a few but all humanity. Knowing full will the pain he was about to endure. I love this performance!

But, as someone once pointed out to me, it deals with Jesus AS A MAN, and He was a human as well as a diety. This song reminds us that because he was human, He didn't relish pain and death any more than any of us. I rejoice in the resurrection, but little in the salvation arc moves me like the scene in Gethsemane, and this song portrays Jesus's fear so honestly and beautifully.

Faith is not the lack of doubt, it is the beleif in spite of doubt, and I think this moment is just jaw dropping in that sense. I’m not a Christian myself but I’ve grown up in a Protestant household and have studied the theology to a degree, this absolutely nails the doubt jesus must have felt all throughout his journey, he believed he was doing gods will, but he could never be sure, and this song encapsulates what that can do to someone.

I was 18 years old the first time I saw this at the theater, I am now 65 years old and it is still one on my favorite movies. I had it on VHS, now on DVD. I watch it every Easter. They brought the play to the small town of Salina, Kansas in about 1990 and it was amazing. Ted Neely even played the part of Jesus. He is awesome.

I've never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Neely, but my brother did. He was working at a radio station when Jesus Christ Superstar came to town. They came to do an interview and my brother was working in the control room and Mr. Neely came in and introduced himself and said hello. My brother said he was so nice.That just seemed like a very nice gesture on his part.

Several times I've met Mr Neeley, Carl Anderson and many of the original & later years touring cast. First time was in the 80's after a JC show at the Kravitz Center in West Palm Beach, FL. At the time, was in the early years of what became a 30yr career in Microbiology/Software. Only mention that bcuz ima hardcore "nerd" prone to logical/rationality. Thus, to wait outside a building IN THE DEAD HUMID HEAT in So FL in the hopes of seeing/meeting a man I'd long considered an 'idol' maybe (?) .... well ..... lets just say I was a nerd b4 it was cool 2b a nerd - you know back in the day when it was VERY UNCOOL - even shameful/embarrassing/a source 2b bullied - and as such, groupie type behaviors NOT in my usual style, lol. Yet, I was raised on JC as I had a 6yr older sister whom CONSTANTLY played the albums & so on that day, in my mid-20's, I somehow felt moved to TRY 2C him @least? Almost decided against when I got back behind that building & realized I was FAR FROM even a few whom apparently felt the very same in being "moved", LOL. There were HUNDREDS lined up. Ug. And IT WAS BOILING HOT. Double ug. At 54yrs old, prolly the ONLY time in my Life I chose to tolerate such conditions .... for ANY purpose/goal. Yet, I did. What a blessing that day came 2b for me. Not only did I meet Mr's Neeley, Anderson & so many others (and Mariah Carey whom played M Magdeline that performance - pffft), I'll NEVER understand fully how it came 2b I was invited to meet up w/the cast at the bar in the local hotel they were staying at. I went & was an event which has always meant much more to me over the years than even the very day it happened. Why? Mr Neeley was SO UNBELIEVABLY GRACIOUS, friendly, warm and "loving" than almost anybody I'd ever met in my Life at that time - and to this day! To say he inspired me would be a gross understatement! He AND Mr Anderson specifically among the many cast members 😌 We conversed for almost 2hrs & I feel he shared his TRUE SELF that day with me. I've never once thought his words/behavior that day were simply in accordance w/being "famous" or otherwise .... Rather, his simple interactions in conversing with me, his sharing on the topics that came up .....AND ESPECIALLY his mannerisms were so .... okay, this is where I KNOW this is gonna sound "hokey or corny" .... but his persona seemed to GENUINELY reflect a personality that seemed to align w/what one might identify as .... or 2b what ..... well .... JESUS would be like. Seriously. Was weird & most unexpected? After all, he was just an actor, right? Playing a part? Yeah ..... NO Somehow, his gentle mannerisms & choice of words absolutely flowed from within him & there was an undeniable awareness there was a spirit - HIS Spirit - that somehow carried within in a VERY REAL sense of Christ. I wondered a few times during the interaction if it wasn't simply that I WAS PERCEIVING such a feeling as a direct result of influence in my having JUST seen the JC SuperStar play & twas merely a lingering effect of the performance? Checked & had to double check myself .... no, it wasn't. There was something ABSOLUTELY AUTHENTIC & GENUINE in his nature that spewed goodwill, warmth & human connection from him (& for the record, Mr Anderson's as well) Anyways, he spoke of not just the performance, play, the ongoing tour, current events, blah blah blah ..... but what ALSO struck me as so admirably benevolent was how he spoke of his family (wife & children) nearing the end of our conversation. Understandably, he was missing his family in his absence from them during the ongoing tour. The topic had come up NOT bcuz or to assuage me from any idea of "hooking up" w/this guy now. LOL - LAST THING I would even have thought of in those days - bein a nerd girl n all *red face* Rather, somehow, it came up during conversation wherein I found myself speaking of my difficulty at the time in recovering from a sorely broken heart & how I found certain JC songs 2b comforting. That was just one of several topics where he shared things from his own Life w/me and which I took 2b advice perhaps? Hope? Dealing w/emotions & NOT just stuffing or running from them? Awe, there was so much he shared w/me in the kindest of nature and w/a warmth that radiated acceptance, not being alone, lessons 2b found in human suffering, blah blah blah ..... I remember at one point, I got goosebumps all over & having this "FEELING" of something that I'd just experienced in his words ..... I felt such a sudden feelimg of being overwhelmed .... & (embarassingly) I just blurted out perhaps a bit TOO loudly "Christ ! Its like you ARE Christ !" Well ..... I dunno WHO was more embarrassed? Him or I? Why? Bcuz suddenly all the others turned around and looked at us and burst into laughter. Mr Neeley visibly blushed. I was lost/confused momentarily. That is, until Mr Anderson came back to where we were sitting & clued me in on how (quoting Carl Anderson) "He often has that effect on folks" Huh? Ohhhhhh, okay, I thought to myself. So he IS just 'playing the part' w/me then? Good one! As I left the hotel an hour later, I realized I was wrong. He went on to explain how the role HAD affected him in his own life and that perhaps the very fact of the impact of PLAYING JESUS 100's of times HAD become somewhat ingrained & how w/out realizing it, perhaps he had "picked up" an understanding behind or within the thought processes of the original "Christ". Well, I could go on, but confident the point has been made? He showed me photo's in his wallet of his wife & children, spoke SO LOVINGLY and kindly of them and his eyes lit up describing to me all the magnificence of each of his family members & THEIR Spirit. And alas, I "got" it ! My own broken heart WOULD EVENTUALLY mend 😊. Something better was in store for me. He reminded of a verse w/in a Led Zeppelin tune, "Rain song" 🎼 Upon every Life a little rain must fall 🎵 He gave me contact info for his agent that day & In the years that followed, I DID make contact three or four times ...... whenever the JC tour came anywhere near where I lived & he ALWAYS had tickets awaiting me at the door and a warm hug after a show 😊. I got to take my older sister twice, the one whom STARTED me on my own love of JC Superstar. Tho he's unaware, was one the BEST days of HER Life just having the opportunity to see the Live JC show after decades of adoring the music & movie. She was my best friend. She died 5yrs ago & whenever I find myself missing her dearly, I come here to watch this vid & listen to this song. Twas her favorite song ever & she OFTEN told me how grateful she was to see the Live JC Superstar & meet Ted Neeley & Carl Anderson. I will always be grateful to them for this as well so I have these memories w/my sister 😪 Apologies for this lengthy comment. Surely, I went on a bit much, eh? My bad 😔 Anyhooooo, tho lengthy & likely boring, just that I felt again moved ..... & intended only to leave my pwn mark in support of others recount justifying the fact that Ted Neeley DEFINITELY IS one of THE kindest of men one could ever meet - or imagine. Eternally indebted to this man for sharing his talent w/the world & his warmth to help heal a young girl w/what she thought would be an unhealable broken heart 💔. Ted was perfect for this movie. With his vocal ability he could have done anything he wanted but he has always been fully dedicated to this role. He is such a great man. The fact that he could still sing this at age 78 says a whole lot about Ted. I love the Ian Gillam version as well, but i don't think there was a more perfect person to play this role than Ted. He has always had my highest respect for what he did in this movie as well as Carl Anderson. Both were perfect.

It's amazing to me that this is a pretty moving song, really humanizing when you see the whole thing. But Everytime I see just the WHYYYYYY by itself I fucking fall apart laughing. Like that part NEEDS the context to be effective otherwise it just looks so fucking crazy. Even having watched it many times, knowing the context without that slow build up I can't handle it by itself.

I love Ted's version among the many versions of JCS, and the charm the musical has in attracting people of all beliefs. I grew up with this version and despite some glaring doctrinal errors this musical has against my Catholic understanding, I still love it! JCS is a door for people to know Jesus regardless of their background. It makes me beam with joy having a musical to which I can sing along God's lines

This song haunted my nightmares every so often as a child, the flashing imagery of the crucifixion was shocked and powerful to me then and still is now. My father actually met Ted when they were on tour back in the 80’a and I would have done anything to see it then. Truly a lyrical and compositional masterpiece that I will definitely be passing down to my children like my father before me.

I lucked out and saw the musical live in the Netherlands several years ago and Ted Neely was playing Jesus! It was insanely good I was grinning ear to ear, singing my little heart out and had tears in my eyes coz this was one of my most watched movies of my childhood, back before you had the insanity of MTV and current days fixation with Netflix and streaming. JCSS is one of the classics!
