Why do newer JATO bottles on c130's (like the Fat Albert footage) seem to throw so many sparks out with the exhaust plume, where the historical color footage of the older ones show clean plumes? It seems weird to me, you'd thinkk the newer ones wouldn't do that. Is it an ablative material in the nozzle doing that?

That was both JATO and JATL, the retro boosters failed. You also forget that they failed the mission (Operation EAGLE CLAW) during a routine refueling. Edit: The Aircraft in question was CREDIBLE SPORT, and it was burried to protect the technology and save face.
