I think there is a lot of potential left to this kind of build before finally give EDFs a full pass. This thing looked like it just needed a different tune and very likely throttle linearization of some sorts, apart from a more rugged duct-design. I'd really love to know what the limits of that thing are and if it could actually be more efficient and faster than our normal designs :3 I love your crazy experiments!

@@LetsFlyRC I was going to ask how you're supposed to tune something that breaks every time it flies. Love the cool projects and I would love to see a bi-plane drone. So a hexacopter, but two motors are mounted horizontally controlled on a switch. Then when you go to "plane" mode, just have to idle the other 4 motors and let the air rushing over them provide the lift. Maybe would need a gimbal on the camera since you'd want it horizonal for plane mode.

I was told that it had to do with how long it took the EDF's to spool up/down, as to why they don't make good multirotor powerplants. I suppose when it has to spin ~2-3x as fast to get thrust to the same level as a comparably "thrusty" propeller setup, that any amount of pitch or roll correction would have to spool up or down 3x as much as it would with a regular propeller. With props on 3s with a 2300kv motor 50% throttle would be ~ 14,500rpm, to speed up to 60% throttle for a correction it'd have to speed up by 3000rpm With an EDF on 3s with a 4300kv motor 50% throttle would be ~ 27,090 rpm, to speed up to 60% throttle for a correction it'd have to speed up by 5400 rpm in the same amount of time as the 3000rpm speedup of the propeller setup. The above figures also assume that the prop setup and the edf setup both hover at the same amount, if it takes an extra 10% throttle to hover with EDF's, the corrections will also take an extra 10% on top of the already near double RPM change it takes because of the KV difference.

@synthyawylder32973 жыл бұрын
I think that you'd get better results adapting standard quad drone props on a standard quad frame & adding a light duct around them for the increased low-speed thrust. Those EDFs you had in that build seemed like they were designed for EDF RC "jet" models. Think, the USN Osprey variable-tilt propped fixed-wing aircraft. I think that a design something like that to be able to switch from hover-flight to a more fixed-wing flight model might increase the speed & more importantly, the range & time in the air. I've seen some time & distance tests with standard-model quad-copter type drones, vs some time & distance tests for fixed-wing drones, & aside from the fixed-wing types generally being faster, they also flew farther & faster & with a lot longer flight time. The fixed-wing aspect would take at least some of the burden off the energy required simply to keep the drone in the air as the only source of lift for the drone. I've been looking but so far haven't seen anything like that. I'd love to see some sort of hybrid flight model & using FPV. It's an idea that's keeps poking at me. Seems like it might be viable. What do you think? Any takers?

I love your projects Shawn. Ponder this combo of 2 of your projects. A high speed 5in quad with a single switch activated EDF mounted at a ridiculous angle used as a warp drive! Kind of like the previous 5 motor drone you built with a 5th motor being activated by the switch. It might take some wizardry in OpenTX or similar to make the switch give a specific amount of power to the EDF when flipped but I think you could pull it off. I'm thinking of the type of drone built for speed records that has the camera almost looking straight up but even if it wasn't that extreme I think it would be awesome and a little less prone to dying since the one EDF would just be a booster? You can do it dude!
@abertheham3 жыл бұрын
Love this idea, but if we’re going to dig into the wizardry cabinet, I’d say put the EDF-booster throttle on a pot/knob or shoulder-slider so it isn’t an all-or-nothing type thing. Although a fast and furious style NOS button (or fighter jet style red flip cover arm switch) would look pretty rad on a radio…
