So this is a turboshaft? What's going on with the drive line?

Just like heavy duty auto clutch chain out to axle?
@highvoltagefeathers
@highvoltagefeathers 3 жыл бұрын
@@dick8997 Its a direct chain drive from the power turbine. At idle, the power turbine produces little torque, and brakes keep the kart stationary.

About time someone finally combined go karting and hearing damage.
@TheOz91
@TheOz91 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, in terms of how loud it is, it is not actually that loud. If you look closely, nobody was wearing ear protection. The power turbine (the thing that you can see spinning inside the metal cylinder) damps a lot of noise. In fact, unless you're throttling up to full power, you can barely hear it at the other side of the parking lot, which is around 100 meters away.

Awesome project and you can see all the hard work that went into it. Well done to you all. Looks like a more compact, advanced and tuned version of colinfurze jet powered kart.

This has done before. I know a guy who did the back in the early 2000's with a JFS100. Did 0 to 100 in 3 seconds. He also made a jet speed boat

It seems, there are infinite applications turbo shaft engines. What's the efficiency? Horse power ?
@highvoltagefeathers
@highvoltagefeathers 3 жыл бұрын
We agree. Efficiency? It's a space heater that accidentally turns some wheels. Horsepower, probably 30-40 when it's really moving. It generates more power as you pick up speed, the parking lot isn't large enough.

I really wish the car industry would put some actual effort into alternative power plants, I mean they're focusing way too hard on electric, why not try turbine and steam once more? They already know how both work quite intimately, such as the Chevy SE-124/Pontiac SE-101 and the Chrysler Turbine, why not develop these things to their limits, right? ICEs have hit 56% efficiency with SkyActivX, electric cars have managed 250 Wh/kg with Tesla's best batteries, back in the 1960s Chevy's SE-124 Chevelle test-bed managed equivalent 15 mpg when the average was around 8 for cars of similar mass and both steam and turbines run on literally any fuel that can be burned in the combustor. There's no reason to not develop this technology I'd say. So wonderful job on this you guys, that's probably the best running turbocharger-style turboshaft engine I've seen yet, very smooth and linear acceleration from what I could tell, smooth startup, the management electrics are quite nifty to see do their job as intended. I'm happy someone is still working on turbine-related automotive projects :D

Considering that we actually built from an oval racing kart from the 70s, that might actually involve re-engineering the entire steering lol

Good catch, unfortunately that camber issue is a result of a bent frame. Toe is set properly and it's comfortable to drive, but eventually it will take some force and welding to fix.

That's so cool. I want to build a turboshaft with at least 100hp to power a medium duty freight truck. It seems like it should be easier than building a piston engine because there's no large scale high temperature casting involved afaik, the parts can be welded steel
