The only F-100 Super Sabre I've seen flying, was at the USAFE RAF Alconbury airshow here in the UK back in the 80s. Also saw the Lockheed T-33, Northrop T-38 and F-86 at the same time and . Great to see the F100 flying again on this video, brings back some happy memories from that time.

If you have ever slept next to the Hun in a hardstand while on alert duty, you learned to sleep through an abrupt "bang-bang-bang" noise in the middle of the night. A heavily loaded F-100 would tend to settle on its struts as night time cooling lowered the pressure of the compressed nitrogen inside. Due to "stiction," one strut dropping usually led to another strut shaking loose until equilibrium was established again. Then there was the clanking of brake discs when the airplane was under tow.

Used to love watching F-100s fly over my grandfather's house in Fort Wayne; they would go directly over his house as they went in to land at Baer Field. Used to land in four ship formation, one peeling off at a time. And they were LOW! Saw the same with F-4Es. Grandpa died in '86, didn't get to see the F-16s or current A-10s.

I'd love to see that F-100 flying in person someday. I don't recall ever seeing one in the air, even as a kid. I never got to see a QF-100 drone in the air, I guess I missed them during the USAF base visits when I was in JROTRC in high school in the 80s. I saw them on the ground at Tyndall, but never one in the air.
@gotmilk916 жыл бұрын
I was in the JROTC and my instructor Major Montague flew the Super Sabre in Vietnam and witnessed a fellow F-100 pilot do a blind strafing run against an enemy heavy gun position and successfully destroyed the operator(s) of that gun; on the other hand, he also saw another F-100 do a similar strafing run, but the Super Sabre very gently continue a steady descent straight into the ground short of the target in what Major Montague described as the pilot obviously taking a bullet or flak to the head

The F-100 used a pulse type afterburner that either was on or off. Later airplanes like the F-4 had a progressive type afterburner that came on low and could be gradually throttled up and down. That's why the F-100 went "bang" when the burner suddenly lit up and it immediately went into full AB. The main difference was the exhaust nozzle. The F-100 used a simple nozzle design that could be either all the way opened or all the way closed. Later airplanes use a progressive nozzle that opens and closes gradually like the petals of a flower.
