One of these ran between Dublin Ireland and UK between 1980 and 1982, but made no money (low passenger numbers, high cancellation due to bad weather) and was sold on to Japan if I remember rightly. Had the pleasure of seeing her in the Alexandra basin before she was laid up, and being "buzzed" at sea while on the Asgard II

They used to have these hydrofoils in Mission Bay, San Diego back in the 60s and 70s. It was great fun riding them. I don't know why they stopped running them. They need to come back.

@@Rabbit.760 They are not good in bad weather or choppy waves. We used to have hydrofoil speed ferries all over the west coast of Norway in the 60s and 70s. And they were great in good weather, but being the North Atlantic, the weather is often bad. So in the 70s/80s they were replaced by catamarans instead. They can go about the same speed in any weather, even though they are a little bit slower.

We built these boats at Boeing back in the day ...they were just so fuel inefficient with 747 CFM jet engines ...but we did make some for the military with big cannons also...fun ride on lake Washington cutting logs in half testing the foils

Very good transport, I rode one in my childhood in the USSR. In the 80s, hydrofoils were the main passenger transport in the Soviet Union. They were made at a factory on the Caspian Sea.

That is similar to a jet powered hydrofoil that was tested in Ft Lauderdale Florida and put in to passenger service in Seattle Washington back in the late 1960s. The only difference is that the foils did not retract in the 1960s version.

This appears to be the first-generation Boeing (Kentron) hydrofoil that operated between the islands of Hawaii for several years. As a first-gen craft it was not sufficiently reliable for scheduled passenger operation in occasionally heavy seas, and the service went out of business. I heard that if they were not foil-borne in interisland waters their seakeeping was miserable and all on board got sick. The two (three?) craft built were sold and it was my understanding that they ended up operating in Hong Kong. They were fast and beautiful to watch and left virtually no wake.

I can confirm two of them are operating in between Hong Kong and Macau. However the company (TurboJet) has decided to decommission them due to high operation cost and replacing them with monohull ferries

You are right so far. This one (a Boing 929 Jetfoil) seen in the video is arriving at Nishino-omote Port in Japan. It was built under license by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. in Kobe, also in Japan. I don't know if it's still in operation but the video was taken in March 2018. Your are welcome :)

Недавно был в Усть Каменогорске, там подобный корабль на подводных крыльях поставили в качестве ресторана или что то подобного, в Павлодаре долгое время тоже стояло возле берега, но на воде, позже тоже куда то на металл сдали после реконструкции набережной, где не нашлось места под этот корабль, увы и ах

@@crazylarryjr I have looked up human powered hydrofoils. These can reach speeds of 21mph as oppose to rowing speed of 12mph. I am not impressed. Nor I am impressed by the fact that the technology is 50 years old but could not be harnessed until computers improved. The way the boat is moving, reducing its drag force by bringing out of the water, its submerged body is impressive.

​@@crazylarryjr The idea existing since a certain time, and an actual effective operating example are two entirely different things. Pretending as if anything remotely close to this existed in the 70's is ignorant. Boats with a similar concept (but horrible control and slower) existed in the 70's, and they were mostly given up on because of that. However later on some European countries and Japan picked up the idea and retried it, with big success (especially the Japan examples).
