Tull put out so much great music that to put a full ranking would be difficult for me , but on the short: 1...Songs from the Wood 2...Heavy Horses 3...Thick as a Brick 4... Aqualung 5...Stormwatch And one outlier, if you enjoy symphonic music "A Classic Case...The London Symphony Orchestra plays the music of Jethro Tull" on RCA Records

Great video. Aqualung is my favorite Tull album. (Just FYI, it's Hymn 43, you incorrectly called it Hymn 47). Also, I absolutely love Songs From The Wood and Benefit. I agree with you on the A album, it is surprisingly good as well. "Flyingdale Flyer" is an incredible song. Anyway, love your video. Jethro Tull is one of best rock bands of all time, and Ian Anderson is a musical genius. Thanks again.

Good job, I wouldn't disagree with Thick As A Brick being their best but my favourite is Songs From The Wood. It"s the one that's been on my turntable the most.

Living in the Past never get considered in these "best of" videos, I assume because it is a mishmash of live takes and miscellaneous songs all pulled together from various times and places. But it has some great songs that you couldn't find anywhere else, at least during the 70's in the US. Lots of beautiful accoustic numbers.

Enjoyed listening to your thoughts on the Tull catalog! Thanks! My list (does not include recent albums, as like you, I have a hard time listening to Ian's voice nowadays. I'm quite a big fan of the "folk rock trilogy," series of albums. I actually include the Chateau D'Herouville tapes, as it is a full length album and I like it quite a bit. I also considered ranking the recent LP Warchild II that just came out - which I may like more than the original! But I don't think I've listened enough to it. I've split them into tiers: 1. Great to see your take on this massive body of work...I get where your coming from but for me the 90s albums work nearer the top 5 and my reason is this...before JT I loved dire straits and still do...then all of a sudden these JT albums....crest..catfish and Rock island come out and its almost dire straits with flute and folky undertones...so I was like yesssss I love this mix of the two sounds. So thats why I was impressed and they have stuck with me. Fav album right now though is Broadsword...also a nice original and new JT sound crossing into each other to form a solid album with some great synth and guitar work with Ians brilliant flute work layered throughout! Awesome job. Music is very subjective, but you back your rankings with reasonable arguments. I just asked for the remastered Thick as a Brick from my office secret Santa, so you know I love that album. It is an amazing work of genius. However, the Album that gets played the most is Songs From The Woods. It transports me to a simpler and more poetic time.

What amazes me about JT is how they created their own sound and theme! They certainly carved out their own niche with a cult of fans! Some are Aqualung fans others - Songs from the Woods others, Stand Up! So many generations of fans!

For me and my wife it is Broadsword and the Beast. The mix was not good, which was maybe due to growing pains moving over to digital media, but the songs are just absolutely wonderful.

Great job, as usual. My list is quite similar to yours with just a few discrepancies. I also include Living in the Past (1972), as I think it is an absolutely essential Tull album, containing mostly songs that are not contained on any other album, and some of their best ever, and deserves to be listed among their best. Overall, my list hasn't changed much from the previous iteration (just a few minor shifts). For me, the top three (TAAB, Aqualung, SFTW) are absolute masterpieces, and the entire top ten are all really great albums, and even through the top 20 are all good albums, worth checking out. Can't disagree with most of those places, although I personally wouldn't have PP at #2. Perhaps I need to give that more listens... My first ever Jethro Tull album was the live set, Busting Out in 1978. Yes I was a teenager back then, lol. From there I went back one to Songs from the Wood and the rest is history

Few bands fell as far from grace as Jethro Tull. Ignoring the Mick Abrahams-dominated first LP, a mediocre blues-band outing, Tull issued three classic albums in a row, then couldn't get arrested while driving blind, after. Their first misstep, Thick As a Brick, fell with a thud, while A Passion Play eliminated any cachet they band had earned, Stand Up to Aqualung. After APP, no one cared very much what Jethro Tull did. I don't bother to rate the '80s/'90s albums, because they are not interesting enough to listen to, long enough to generate any opinion, but "Next!" The lone exception is Crest of a Knave, when it looked like Ian might have found his mojo. It wasn't to be. If one discovered Jethro Tull, from the beginning, Everything after the classic three was a let-down, at best, if not an excuse to curse a complete waste of money. Music has been evolving, since the days of rocks and logs. Tull "evolved", from an exciting, vibrant band, into a listless, uninteresting ego trip by Ian Anderson. After Crest of a Knave, I stopped wasting my money, bought better examples of rock 'n' roll. Practically everything you wrote is incorrect. Both TAAB and APP went to #1 on the US charts, and Tull was selling out arenas throughout the 70's. Even well into the 80's, Tull was packing arenas, only playing smaller venues starting in the early 90s when grunge ruled. In addition, SFTW and HH are much beloved albums and hardly indicative of a "let down."

@@rightchordleadership They WENT to the "top of the charts", BECAUSE of Stand Up, Benefit, and Aqualung. If EITHER had been Tull's FIRST album, we wouldn't be talking about them, AT ALL! Unlike you, I bought these albums as NEW releases. Listening to Tull, from the beginning, is very different from hearing LP #12, or #18, first, then moving backward. Both albums were roundly criticized in the press, radio didn't know WHAT to do with 'em, and fans were displeased! APP is dreck, TAAB is barely listenable, but, hey, I just lived through that era, as an adult, a musician, writer, and full-on rocker, during all of it.
