I played the shit out of BO when I was younger. Haven't heard a better live album, original mix notwithstanding. Looking forward to hearing this new version.

@loucontino48044 ай бұрын
I'm right there with you on the full version of "Songs From The Wood" on this Anniversary Set. Bursting Out was in my car deck for months! In fact, Bursting Out is still considered by me to be one of the finest Prog Live Albums ever! The 1978 Show at MSG, I attended. I can remember feeling so let down that entire show to find John Glascock was ill and Tony Williams was filling in on bass. I remember also feeling that Barrie Barlow was a little less energetic than other times I saw Tull. Having seen Tull every tour that decade, the '78 show was not the best Tull concert for me.
@mattbush58483 ай бұрын
Agreed. Like you I saw all of the 70s tours starting with Aqualung in '71. I felt that the band was at its peak in '72 with TAAB, the live show was so over the top fantastic. In my opinion, the Songs From The Wood tour in '77 was their last truly "magical" tour and things went downhill quickly afterward, but they were still the best live band for a few more years.

Again, superb review! This has always been my favorite live album. I bought it when it first came out on vinyl, when I was 15! I've always considered it an amazing introduction, to anyone not familiar with Tull. These songs just represent such a great collection of their catalog, up to that point. I have only listened to the BO 5.1 once, on this, but I really need to dig in and devote more time to it.

Man I’m with you 100%. My way of experiencing these box sets is different each time, but I always love the books. And you hit it right on the head with the “definitive”thick as a brick. I also showed that clip to so many people as a starter. But what I learned from you in this great review was to really give the surround sound a go … And soon ! I went through the CDs just to see and hear the bonus tracks and I enjoyed the extra banter as well. My first Tull show was the 25th anniversary and roots to branches was right after that! I don’t understand why Ian’s son could not throw down some quick drum tracks for an ‘alternate’ under wraps. In the past, it seems like he’s hinting at it, but that it would be so costly to have studio time for something like that and I just don’t get it. Anyway, thanks for boosting my enjoyment of this set. it was already high!

Thanks for the detailed review. Matches my experience, with the added expertise of a sound expert which I am not. There are just two things I was slightly disappointed with about this release. First, I wish it were on Bluray rather than DVDs so we would get the entire album on one disc, as opposed to having to change discs in the middle. Second, because there are no notes by Wilson or an actual "Tales of the Tapes" type text, it's a little unclear why we don't have details of which German gigs the no-Bern tracks come from. Were all the reels unlabelled to the extent that not one of these tracks can be ascertained to be from this or that performance ? Are there no bootleg recordings to compare them with ? I hope maybe diehard fans will help determine at least some of the sources, because I was really expecting to know every last detail about where and when this album was recorded.
@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout5 ай бұрын
I think most people these days still have DVD players, though I agree that a blu ray would be nice. Thinking of the XTC and Crimson style ‘boxed set on a disc’ approach - which could work really well for Tull, not to mention Atmos seems to be the future and it’s odd that the Tull sets are not yet adopting it. I also really wanted some notes from Wilson, I think that would’ve helped my review immensely. According to the box liner notes, nobody has any idea where or when the German dates were recorded because the multitracks were cut together ‘Zappa style’ with razor blade and tape, and no one kept track of the sources. Thanks for viewing and commenting ! I agree with much of these (minor) criticisms and thinking back on it I wish I’d brought up the point about Wilson providing liner notes. That’s something I’ve always enjoyed in past sets.
@aymericleroy85005 ай бұрын
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout What I fail to understand is how, as you say, the multis were (un)labelled and treated in such a casual manner, yet all of them were still available and properly sorted for Wilson to remix, albeit with no outtakes made available to us. This would seem to indicate that only those fragments which were used in the final album have been kept. Or that there was no budget/editorial interest in having unused takes included (like, for instance, we have the individual shows used to compile GG's Playing the Fool). As for DVD v/s Bluray, with Bluray players available for such low prices (AND being able to play DVDs and CDs), I just don't get how anyone can still be resistant to the format. It's not like you could play DVDs in your car and not Bluray's - both require a TV, so it's not like you need an entirely different set-up for a Bluray player...

Thank you for this really helpful review ... just got my copy today and going through the mechanics of ripping to .flac ... I'm pretty anal doing that - making sure I get both Parts 1 and 2 aggregated as a single "album" with tracks numbered sequentially ... and also doing a "rip as one" (using DBpoweramp) to get Part 1 and Part 2 each as 2 x single, seanless, complete tracks ... and aggregating the soundcheck tracks as a single "soundchecks" album in its own right with tracks renumbered appropriately. A "definitive" track listing of the MSG DVD 3 would be helpful ... I believe Locomitive Breath was played mid set (for broadcast) as well as in its usual place... still to watch it. These sets are fabulous and, like you, I would like to see Under Wraps given the full treatment ... including a remix with "proper" drums as well as flat transfer. Ian has suggested that it would not be cost effective ... but if he opened a crowd funding to pre-pay for getting it done then I'd be in .... thanks again for video ... enjoyed it ... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland .. p s. the Tull gig in Aberdeen a couple of months back was excellent... great set, high energy, great playing and sound .... maybe a live document of the tour will appear sometime - if so, it would be worth getting.

Just played DVD ... and, as I eventually found in the book, there are 2 versions of Locomotive Breath on DVD ... sound quality of MSG gig is great ... when you play the DVD you get audio with photos on screen until the final few seconds of Heavy Horses ... that's where TV video starts ... then band go offstage for minute or so before they return and you get the start (proper) of the televised gig with a great "snappy" version of Thick as a Brick .... video continues through to Locomotive Breath #1 ... then video reverts to photos on screen thereafter through to end of disc concluding with version #2 of Locomotive Breath ... cheers

@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout thanx - I was hoping the source material would be the same. If that is indeed the case then the vinyl has a pretty good chance of being really nice. Not bothered at all about this, the tour show is in the Heavy Horses box. Tull don't change the performance at all so the tracks will sound exactly the same. The video would be nice but let's be honest, you'll play it once in every five years or even longer. So, it's the first one I've not got and won't bother getting. I've even got the original Aqualung box with the vinyl. Won't get Under Wraps either, might get Crest of a Knave, not sure yet. Most Tull albums after Broardsword aren't worth bothering with. The best Tull finished after Stormwatch. If it was around £30 mark I might have got it, for the memory/nostalgia but no way at the current price. I have the music, have the tour, so just not worth the money.

@@stuartraybould2574 it’s totally your call to make an informed choice based on your needs and situation. But for me ? I was never happy with the Jakko mix on Berne. Two keyboard players and both are buried to the point of inaudibility on the 5.1 mix. This is put together so much better imo and I think the performances Ian chose are better than their Berne counterparts. Also, the MSG video sweetens the deal considerably in my eyes.
